Install a lockwire on the drain plug.

Remove the Lip Seal

(1)
Install the safety rod adapter to the higher end of the safety rod:
(a)
Remove the lockbolt of the safety rod nut.
(b)
Remove the safety rod nut.
(c)
Attach the safety rod adapter to the top of the safety rod.
1) Tighten the adapter lanyard to the structure to hold the safety rod.

Remove the safety rod from the horizontal stabilizer actuator:
(a)
Remove the safety shaft retaining bolt from the lower gimbal retaining pin.
(b)
Remove the safety shaft.
(c)
Remove the safety rod through the removal door.
NOTE: The safety rod weight is approximately 35 pounds.

Remove the lip seal:
(a)
Remove the lip seal housing: 1) Remove the attachment screws. 2) Remove the lip seal housing through the space between the
lower gimbal and the bottom of the primary brake housing.
(b)
Remove the lip seal and the O-ring from the lip seal housing.

Apply a thin layer of grease (BMS 3-33 to MIL-G-23827) to the inside of the lip seal housing.
