Adjust the ball screws.

Adjust the ball screws if the ball screw nuts clearance at the upstop is out of the tolerance.

Disconnect the flap torque tubes at the transmissions:

 (a)  
Remove three screws which attach the coupling sleeve to the torque tube.

 (b)  
Move the coupling sleeve near the gearbox.

Adjust the ball screws:

 (a)  
Use the manual drive tool to turn each transmission coupler until the ball screw nut and universal joint stops touch.

 (b)  
Connect the torque tube between the transmissions.

 (c)  
Turn the coupler one turn plus 19 teeth in the extend direction to move the flap ball screw nuts away from the stops.

 (d)  Make sure that the clearance between the universal joint and the ball screw nut stop on each transmission is 0.72 inch
 (1.8 cm).

Install the flap torque tubes:

 (a)  
Move the coupling sleeve on the torque tube.

 (b)  
Install the three screws that attach the coupling sleeve to the torque tube.

 CAUTION:_______MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL LOCKWIRE ON THE COUPLING SCREWS. IF THE COUPLING SCREWS COME OFF, THE TORQUE TUBE COUPLING WILL DISCONNECT AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE.

 (c)  
Install the lockwire to hold the screws together.

 0.90 inch (1.4 to 2.3 cm) for both of the ball screws. If not, see "Adjust the ball screws" and (Fig. 501, View A).

Put the speed brake control lever in the UP detent to lift spoilers No. 5 thru 8 above the inboard flaps.

Install the spoiler actuator locking tools or close the flight control shutoff valve for hydraulic system No. 4.

Make sure the inboard aileron is in the neutral position.

 WARNING:_______ MAKE SURE THAT PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAR OF THE LE AND TE
 FLAPS AND FLAP DRIVE MECHANISMS BEFORE YOU MOVE THE FLAP
 CONTROL LEVER.  MOVING THE FLAP CONTROL LEVER WITH THE
 HYDRAULIC SYSTEM PRESSURIZED WILL CAUSE THE FLAPS TO MOVE
 QUICKLY.
 CAUTION:_______ MONITOR THE FLAPS CAREFULLY WHILE THEY RETRACT.  THE FLAPS CAN

 BE DAMAGED BECAUSE OF INCORRECTLY ADJUSTED COMPONENTS.
 (5)  Put the flap control lever in the UP detent to retract the flaps.
 NOTE: Control the hydraulic pressure to retract the flaps slowly.
