Prepare for Installation

 (1)  
If used parts are to be installed, make sure the parts are in the tolerance (AMM 27-51-04/601).

If the flap carriage must be installed to the midflap, install the flap carriage (AMM 27-51-28/401).

 (3)  
If a replacement flap or midflap will be installed, adjust the carriage shims:

 (a)  
Remove access panels 587DT and 587HT (on the left wing) or 687DT and 687HT (on the right wing) above the aft end of each main carriage spindle.

 (b)  
Measure the thickness of the shims between the carriage bearing support fitting and the midflap frame. Compare this thickness to the thickness of the shims that were used with the midflap you removed.

 (c)  
Adjust the shim thickness to the value of the shims on the midflap you removed, if it is necessary (Fig. 401):


 NOTE: If the other shim thickness dimension is not known,
____ use 0.25-inch thick shims. The shim thickness will be adjusted during the adjustment procedure.
 CAUTION:_______HOLD THE CARRIAGE. IF THE CARRIAGE IS NOT HELD, IT WILL TURN ON THE FORWARD BEARING AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FORWARD BEARING.
 1) Remove the bolts (33 and 37) and washers (34 and 38).
 NOTE: The nuts (35 and 39) and retainers (36 and 40) stay
____ in the fitting and frame.

 2) Remove the shims (41 and 42), and adjust the thickness of
 the shims. 3) Apply BMS 5-95 sealant to the bolts. 4) Install the bolts and washers. 5) Tighten the 3/8-inch bolts to 450-550 pound-inches
 (51-62 N-m) and the 7/16-inch bolts to 760-900 pound-inches (86-102 N-m).
 (d)  
Install the access panels.

Install The Outboard Flap


 S 434-031
 (1)
Install the failsafe links (32) if it is necessary (Fig. 401).

 (a)  
Put the failsafe link and midflap fitting into their position.

 (b)  
Install the bushing (29).

 (c)  
Install the bolt (28).

 (d)  
Install the washer (30) and locknut (31).

 (e)  
Tighten the locknut to 290-350 pound-inches (33-40 N-m).

 (f)  
Align the failsafe link and the carriage.

 (g)  
Put the washer (45) on the bolt (46).

 (h)  
Install the bolt.

 (i)  
Install the washer (44) and locknut (43).

 (j)  
Tighten the locknut to 230-250 pound-inches (26-28 N-m).

 (k)  
Loosen the locknut 1/4 turn.

 (2)  
Install a forward bogie on each flap track (Fig. 401).

Attach the strongbacks to the midflap. If the aftflap is installed, make sure the aftflap turnbuckle and the clips are attached to the midflap and the aftflap (Fig. 402).
