 (3)  Set the latch pressures on the fan cowl panels as follows (AMM 71-11-03/501):
 -1 at 50 pounds (222.4 N)
 -2 at 35 pounds (155.6 N)
 -3 at 35 pounds (155.6 N)
 -4 at 35 pounds (155.6 N)

 (4)  
Close the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 (5)  
Do a check for air gaps between the fan cowl panels and the rub strips.

 (a)  
Lightly hit the suface of the fan cowl panel above the rub strip with a soft mallet.

 (b)  
Continue to do this each five inches (127 mm) around the circumference of the torque box.

 


 NOTE: Start from the top of the torque box and move down.

 (c)  
Make a mark on the thrust reverser sleeve at each location you hear a "hollow" sound.

 (d)  
If there are no areas that make a "hollow" sound, continue with the step for the aerodynamic smoothness check.

 (e)  
Open the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 (f)  
Apply a thin layer of modeling clay on the rub strip 2.5 inches in each direction from the location of each mark.

 (g)  
Close the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 (h)  
Open the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 (i)  
If the modeling clay was not touched by the fan cowl panel, do the steps that follow: 1) Add more modeling clay to make the layer thicker. 2) Close the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201). 3) Open the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 (j)  
Measure the thickness of each layer of modeling clay.

 (k)  
Find the applicable shim for each area that had modeling clay.

(l)  Remove or add layers of lamination to each applicable shim to get the same thickness and contour as that of the clay.
 NOTE: The shims are made from 0.0025 inch (0.06 mm) thick
____ aluminum laminations. The permitted limit for air gaps is 0.040 inch (1.0 mm) maximum at the locations of the holes on the rub strips. There are 12 holes in the rub strips on each engine.
 (m)  
Attach each shim to the external side of the applicable rub
 strip with spray adhesive.


 (n)  
Close the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 (6)  Do a check for aerodynamic smoothness.
 (a)  
Start at the top, and put a mark each five inches (127 mm)
 around the circumference of each fan cowl panel.


 (b)  
Use calipers to measure the aerodynamic smoothness between the thrust reverser sleeves and the fan cowl panels at each mark.

 (c)  
Write the measured values on the fan duct cowls.


 NOTE: If the thrust reverser sleeve is higher than the fan
____ cowl panel, the value is positive. If the fan cowl panel is higher than the thrust reverser sleeve, the value is negative. The maximum permitted positive value is 0.070 inch (1.8 mm) . The maximum permitted negative value is 0.070 inch (1.8 mm).
 (d)  Calculate the average value.
 NOTE: The average value must be between +0.040 and -0.020
____
 inches.

 (e)  If one of the measured values or the average value is not in the permitted limits, do the steps that follow: 1) Open the fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201). 2) Attach the applicable shim piece at each location that had
 a positive measured value.
 NOTE: Use spray adhesive to attach the shim piece.
