TURBINE EXHAUST SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General
_______
 A.  The turbine exhaust system provides a smooth exit path for the turbine exhaust. The major components are the primary sleeve assembly and the turbine exhaust plug assembly. The sleeve and plug together form a converging - diverging nozzle which aids in producing thrust.
 2.  Primary Sleeve Assembly (Fig. 1)

 A.  The primary sleeve assembly is located aft of the turbine rear frame. The sleeve has a conical shape. Primary exhaust gases travel through the sleeve to the atmosphere.
 B.  The primary sleeve assembly is bolted to the turbine rear frame.

3.  Turbine Exhaust Plug Assembly (Fig. 1)

 A.  The exhaust plug is mounted inside the primary sleeve. The exhaust plug is aerodynamically shaped to reduce drag and increase thrust. The turbine exhaust plug is bolted to the turbine rear frame inside the primary sleeve assembly. The turbine exhaust plug has a converging shape from forward to rear.

 WARNING: DO THE DEACTIVATION PROCEDURE TO PREVENT THE OPERATION OF THE
_______ THRUST REVERSER. THE ACCIDENTAL OPERATION OF THE THRUST REVERSER CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 (1)  
Do the deactivation procedure for the thrust reverser for ground maintenance (AMM 78-31-00/201).

Examine the primary sleeve assembly (Fig. 601).

 (a)  
Remove the primary sleeve assembly (AMM 78-11-01/401).

 (b)  
Make sure that the primary sleeve drain is not clogged (Fig. 601).
