Inspect The Rotary Flex Shaft (Fig. 601).

For the applicable rotary flex shaft, do this task: Remove The Rotary Flex Shaft (AMM 78-31-04/401).

Use a 5x magnifying glass to do a visual inspection of the rotary flex shaft wires, as follows:
(a)
Look for a broken wire.
1) If you find a broken wire, then replace the rotary flex shaft (AMM 78-31-04/401).
(b)
Look for wire-strand separations.
1) If the width of the strand separation is equal to or less than the diameter of the wire strand, the the rotary flex shaft is acceptable.
2) If the width of the strand separation is greater than the diameter of the wire strand, the replace the rotary flex shaft (AMM 78-31-01/401).

(3) Look for twists in the square ends of the rotary flex shaft. (a) If you find a twist in the square end, then replace the rotary flex shaft (AMM 78-31-04/401).

(4) Look for kinks in the rotary flex shaft. (a) If you find a kink that is less than or equal to 0.020 inch (0.508 mm), then the rotary flex shaft is acceptable. (b) If you find a kink that is greater than 0.020 inch (0.508 mm), then replace the rotary flex shaft (AMM 78-31-04/401).

(5) Look for abraded or worn areas on the surface of the rotary flex shaft.
(a) If you find abraded or worn areas, then calculate the amount of face wear W:
1) 2) 3) Measure the diameter D2 of the rotary flex shaft at the maximum depth of the worn area.Measure the diameter D1 of the rotary flex shaft in an adjacent area that is not damaged.Subtract diameter D2 from diameter D1 and then divide by 2 to find face wear W .
NOTE:____ (D2 - D1)/2 = W.
(b) (c) If the face wear W is less than or equal to 0.013 inch (0.330 mm), then the rotary flex shaft is acceptable.If the face wear W is greater than 0.013 inch (0.330 mm), then replace the rotary flex shaft (AMM 78-31-04/401).

(6) If the rotary flex shaft is serviceable, then do this task: The Rotary Flex Shaft (AMM 78-31-04/401). Install
