SIDE CARGO DOOR - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
___________________________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  The side cargo door is located on the left side of the fuselage aft of the wings, between body stations 1780 and 1920 (Fig. 1). It is hinged at the top and opens outward and up to allow cargo to be loaded onto the main deck level through an opening approximately 134 inches wide by 122 inches high.
 B.  The door is normally operated through four mechanisms: master latch lock, latch, hook and lift. The master latch lock mechanism is manually operated. The latch, hook and lift mechanisms are electrically powered by 115 v AC electric actuators. The hook mechanism contains two electric actuators; the latch and lift, only one. Each mechanism is mechanically independent, but electrically sequenced with the other mechanisms to operate at the correct time in the opening and closing cycles.
 C.  A manual drive mechanism is installed to allow the door to be opened in the event of a failure in the electrical system. Each electric actuator has a manual drive port into which a tool can be inserted to rotate the actuator manually. The manual drive ports of the latch and hook actuators are accessible through plugs in the door outer skin. The lift power unit manual drive port is connected by a flexible shaft to an angle gearbox installed flush with body skin just aft of the door. The lift actuator is operated manually through this gearbox and flexible shaft from inside or outside the airplane.
 D.  The door is controlled by either of two switches installed on separate panels in the same housing just aft of the door at window level. One switch is accessible from inside the airplane, the other from outside.
 E.  Electrical sequencing of the master lock, latch, hook and lift actuators is accomplished by switches which are actuated as each mechanism nears the end of its travel.
 F.  A door warning system gives a door open warning indication on EICAS in the control cabin when the door is not fully closed. Refer to 52-71-00/001, Door Warning System - D&O for information on this system.
 G.  The side cargo door operates correctly in wind that is less than 40 knots. It can stay in the fully open position in gusts that are less than 65 knots.
 2.  Side Cargo Door (Fig. 1)_______________
 A.  The side cargo door is hinged at the top by a multi-segment piano-type hinge. It opens outward and upward to allow cargo to be loaded onto the main deck level through a clear opening 134 inches wide by 122 inches high. The lift mechanism links connect to fittings at each edge of the door, just below the hinge line.

 B.  A flexible, rubberized rain seal is installed all along the hinge line to prevent rain from entering through the open door. Extruded pressure and acoustic seals are installed all around the door to prevent loss of cabin pressure and reduce interior noise level.
 C.  The door inner skin extends from the top of the door to just below the pressure relief doors. Below that, the door frames and intercostals are covered only by removable decorative and protective linings.
 D.  The 10 latches along the bottom of the door, the two midspan latches and the hinge at the top transmit door pressurization loads to body structure. Four door stops, two on each edge of door, arrest inward movement. A centering roller at the bottom of the door enters a fitting on the door sill to ensure alignment of the latches.
