MAXIMUM CRUISE
1) This is the maximum thrust permitted for normal cruise operation.
(e)
IDLE 1) This is not a specific thrust, but a thrust lever position. 2) The minimum thrust applicable for operation on the ground
(low idle) or in flight (high idle) is automatically controlled by the reset idle solenoid on the main engine control. a) The operation of the reset idle solenoid is controlled
by the ground sensing relay, the wing flap position switches and the operation of inlet anti-ice.
C. Wind Limitations During Engine Ground Operations.
S 842-037-C00
(1) Static ground operation of the engines is not permitted for these
conditions:
(a)
Power settings that are more than 70% N1 rpm, and
(b)
Crosswinds that are more than 15 knots, or
(c)
All tailwinds that are more than 5 knots.

(2) Preferred relative wind direction and wind velocity limits during
the engine runs for part power trim are shown in Fig. 206.
CAUTION: IF ENGINE RUNS ARE DONE OUT OF THE PREFERRED LIMITS
_______ (FIG. 206), MONITOR THE ENGINE PARAMETERS N1, N2 AND EGT. ENGINE OVERHEAT OR STALL CAN OCCUR AND CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE.
(a) Also, the preferred wind velocity variation is 4 knots or less.
S 842-039-C00
(3)
Tailwinds, or winds with tailwind components, can cause bad effects
on the ground operation of the engines.
(a)
During the start of the engine, and at idle or low power, tail winds can cause high EGT values.
(b)
When the engine is operated at more than 90% N1 speeds, the tailwinds can cause fan tip stall. 1) The start of a fan tip stall during stable engine operation
can be identified by these conditions.
a) The N1 speed increases quickly.
b) The airplane vibration increases.
c) You can hear a blowtorch sound that continuously starts
and stops.
(c) To prevent fan tip stall at N1 speeds of 90%, you must move the thrust lever rearward in 1 to 2 seconds.
NOTE: When a fan tip stall is about to occur or has occurred,
____ quick movement of the thrust lever rearward will almost always permit recovery from the stall.
D. Overspeed Limits
S 842-040-C00
(1) The operate the engine at low idle power for 3 minutes, then
shut down the engine for these redline conditions:
-N1 is more than 106% (5,486 rpm) and less than 109% (5,641 rpm), or
-N2 is more than 105% (15,183 rpm) and less than 106% (15,335 rpm).
(a) After shutdown, you must do an overspeed inspection (AMM 72-00-00/601).
S 842-042-C00
(2) AIRPLANES WITH N1 INDICATOR REDLINE LIMIT OF 102%;
If an overspeed indication (warning light illumination) occurs, no
action is necessary if the N1 rpm is not more than 106%.
