3. Engine Ground Safety Precaution
_______________________________
A. General
(1) The operation of jet power plants is dangerous. While the engine operates, these dangerous conditions can occur.
(a)
There is a very strong suction at the front of the engine that can pull persons and unwanted materials into the air inlet.
(b)
Very hot, high speed gases go rearward from the turbine exhaust nozzle.
(c)
The fan exhaust at high thrust has very high speed.
(d)
When the thrust reverser is extended, the fan exhaust goes forward while the turbine exhaust is goes rearward.

B. Air Inlet (Fig. 201)
S 842-007-C00
(1)
Figure 201 shows the hazard areas near the air inlet with dangerous
air conditions.
(a)
Inlet hazard areas are shown on the left and right fan cowl panels with stripes and placards. 1) There are red warning stripes, no entry placards,
above idle - 13 ft hazard area placards, and warning placards.
(b)
Persons positioned near the power plant during power plant operation must be aware of the hazard areas aft of the inlet cowl lip. 1) This hazard area extends completely around the outer
diameter and to the forward end of the power plant. a) At idle power, the hazard areas start four feet aft of the inlet cowl lip. b) At above idle power, the hazard areas start five feet aft of the inlet cowl lip. 2) If the surface wind is more than 25 knots, increase the distance of the hazard area by 20%. 3) If the ramp surfaces are wet or frozen, make the ramp clean to prevent injury to persons. 4) After the engine is shutdown, let the engine spool down before the air inlet is approached.
