d) Turn the handles to the rear of the airplane to lock the assemblies to the actuator fittings. 7) Attach the free end of each jack assembly to the correct base assembly with the ball lockpins.
(b) Position the dial indicator between respective points to measure total clearance between the pin and bushing. 1) For index No. 1, measure the free play between the
stabilizer A-frame structure and the upper gimbal assembly.
NOTE: Attach a dial indicator to the stabilizer A-frame

structure.
2) For index No. 2, measure the free play between the upper gimbal assembly and the ballscrew nut.
NOTE: Attach a dial indicator to the upper gimbal
____
assembly.
3) For index No. 3, measure the free play between the bottom of the lower gimbal assembly and the fuselage structure.
NOTE: Attach a dial indicator to the bulkhead at station
____ 2460 below the stabilizer actuator and between RBL 36 and LBL 36.
4) For index No. 4, measure the free play between the primary brake housing and the top of the lower gimbal assembly.
NOTE: Attach a dial indicator to the primary brake
____
housing.
(c)
Set the dial indicators to zero.
(d)
Use the torque adapter and torque wrench to turn the spanner wrench fittings on each jack assembly to 30 pound-feet (40.7 newton-meters) to move the front of the stabilizer down.

Compare the dial indicator readings with the permitted dimensions shown in Fig. 601.

Repair or replace the parts that exceed wear limits.

Measure the ball nut to screw wear (Index No. 5 on Fig. 601):
(a)
Install the stabilizer handling equipment, as necessary.
(b)
Clamp ball nut lock tool to screw shaft just below ball nut.
(c)
Attach the dial indicator to lock tool and position probe on lower side of ball nut. Make sure that the dial indicator is vertically in line with the stabilizer actuator.
(d)
Set the dial indicator to zero.
(e)
Use the torque adapter and torque wrench to turn the spanner wrench fittings on each jack assembly to 30 pound-feet (40.7 newton-meters) to move the front of the stabilizer down.
(f)
Compare the dial indicator reading with the permitted dimensions shown in Fig. 601.
(g)
Repair or replace the parts that exceed wear limits.

Measure the primary brake backlash (Index No. 6 on Fig. 601):
(a)
Install the stabilizer handling equipment, as necessary.
(b)
Clamp ball nut lock tool to the lower end of the jackscrew.
(c)
Attach the dial indicator to lock tool and position probe on upper cover of the stabilizer actuator gear housing.
(d)
Set the dial indicator to zero.
(e)
Use the torque adapter and torque wrench to turn the spanner wrench fittings on each jack assembly to 30 pound-feet (40.7 newton-meters) to move the front of the stabilizer down.
(f)
Compare the dial indicator reading with the permitted dimensions shown in Fig. 601.
(g)
Repair or replace the parts that exceed the wear limits.
(4)
Remove the dial indicator.
