Measure the Free Play at the Stabilizer Jackscrew


 S 496-038
 (1)  
Install the stabilizer handling equipment (Fig. 602):

 (a)  
Loosely attach the support brackets of the spreader bar to the stiffeners with bolts.

 (b)  
If spreader bar and support brackets cannot be installed due to interference with air instrument tubing, do these steps: 1) Loosen the fittings for the pitot and static lines. 2) Loosen the pitot and static line clamps mounted on the

 bulkhead stiffener. 3) Disconnect and cap the pitot and static lines outboard of the actuator assembly. 4) Move the pitot and static lines outboard of the spreader bar and support brackets.

 (c)  
Loosely attach the spreader bar to the support brackets with the bolts.

 (d)  
Tighten the bolts of the support bracket and the spreader bar equally.

 (e)  
Attach the left and the right jack assemblies to the spreader bar with the ball lockpins.

 (f)  
Install the base assemblies: 1) Move the clamping arms of the base assembly to the open position. 2) With the handles pointed to the up position, install one assembly on each stabilizer actuator fitting.


 3)  Push the clamping arms together until two lugs are behind the actuator fitting vertical web and the other two lugs are below the sloped top web.
 4)  Turn the handles to the rear of the airplane to lock the assemblies to the actuator fittings.
 (g)  Attach the free end of each jack assembly to the correct base assembly with the ball lockpins.

 (2)  
Measure the free play at the stabilizer jackscrew.

 (a)  
Install the dial indicator:


 1)  Attach the dial indicator to the bulkhead at station 2460 below the stabilizer actuator and between RBL 36 and LBL 36 and position the probe below the jackscrew support fitting to measure the vertical movement of the stabilizer.
 2)  Set the dial indicator to zero.
 (b)  
Use the torque adapter and torque wrench to tighten the spanner wrench fittings on each jack assembly to 30 pound-feet (40.7 newton-meters) to move the front of the stabilizer down.

 (c)  
Write the free play reading from the dial indicator and refer to it as X, X = _______________(inches/millimeters).

 (3)  
Remove the stabilizer handling equipment.

 (a)  
Remove the caps from the pitot and static lines.

 (b)  
Tighten the fittings on the pitot and static lines.

 (c)  
Tighten the pitot and static line clamps to the stiffener mounting brackets.

 (d)  
Examine the pitot and static connections for leaks (AMM 34-11-00/201).

Measure Free Play at the Left and Right Stabilizer Hinges (With Check Tool)

 (1)  Measure the free play at the left stabilizer hinge:
 WARNING: DO NOT START THE ENGINE, JACK, MOVE OR FUEL THE AIRPLANE
_______ WHEN THE TRUSSES ARE REMOVED. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONNEL OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 (a)  
Remove the left upper truss between the hinge support fitting and the airplane structure.

 (b)  
Install the check tool and the dial indicator at the left stabilizer hinge. 1) Install the jack assembly adjacent to the left stabilizer


 hinge (Fig. 602). 2) Connect the hose of the hydraulic pump assembly to the jack
 assembly with the quick disconnect coupling. 3) Close the release valve on the hydraulic pump assembly. 4) Set the L.H JACK switch on the hydraulic pump assembly to
 the RAISE/LOWER position.
 5)  Adjust the hydraulc ram and set screw on the jack beam assembly to move the support clevis on the jack assembly until it contacts the lower chord of the stabilizer rear spar in both directions.
 6)  Install the dial indicator below the left stabilizer hinge fitting to measure the vertical motion of the hinge fitting.
 7)  Set the dial indicator to zero.
 CAUTION: DO NOT EXCEED 6,000 PSI (41,370 KPA) LIMIT ON GAGE
