 A. Functional Description
 (1)
The leading edge flaps and slats are controlled by the trailing edge flap system. When trailing edge flaps are fully retracted, the leading edge flap and slat control valve is closed and the leading edge flap and slat actuators are held in the retracted position by system B hydraulic pressure. When trailing edge flaps are extended to the 1, 2, or 5 degree position, the control valve moves to the intermediate extend position so that the leading edge slats move to the intermediate extend position and the leading edge flaps fully extend. When trailing edge flaps are extended to the 10 degree position and beyond, the control valve is fully opened. Hydraulic pressure is ported to fully extend all leading edge slats.

 (2)
Retraction of the trailing edge flaps also retracts the leading edge flaps and slats. As trailing edge flaps retract to the 5 degree position, the leading edge flap and slat control valve moves to the intermediate extend position. This retracts the leading edge slats to the intermediate extend position, while leading edge flaps remain fully extended. Further retraction of trailing edge flaps to the FLAP UP position closes the valve and retracts all leading edge flaps and slats.

 (3)
The autoslat system automatically extends the leading edge slats from the intermediate extend position to the full extend position and back to the intermediate extend position. The stall management computers are enabled during takeoff when the nose gear shock strut extends. If the AOA sensors indicate that the angle of attack is too great, the computers will activate the autoslat valve. When the main gear lifts off, the angle of attack required for autoslat activation increases, in several seconds reaching a final value of approximately 5.8 degrees for the remainder of the flight.

 (4)
When either solenoid in the autoslat valve is activated, the valve ports hydraulic pressure from the intermediate slat extend pressure line to the full extend pressure line which fully extends the slats. When the AOA sensors indicate that the angle of attack has dropped below approximately 5.8 degrees, the solenoids are de-energized, pressure is removed from the full extend line, and the slats return to the intermediate extend position.

LEADING EDGE AUTOSLAT SYSTEM - TROUBLE SHOOTING
_______________________________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  A malfunction of the autoslat system is indicated on the flight deck by illumination of the AUTO SLAT FAIL light on the P5 panel. Illumination of the AUTO SLAT FAIL light without pressing the master caution recall button indicates a fault with both autoslat computers. Under this condition autoslat deployment is not possible.
 B.  Illumination of the AUTO SLAT FAIL light only when the master caution recall button is pressed indicates one of the following:
 (1)
An alpha COMPARE HI or an alpha COMPARE LO has been detected by one or both computers. (The Greek letter alpha on the face of the autoslat computers refers to the angle of airflow or AOA vane.)

 (2)
Either autoslat computer no. 1 or autoslat computer no. 2 is disabled.

 C.
When you see an AUTOSLAT FAIL indication on the P5 panel, the LED indicator lights and the switches on the face of the autoslat computers are used to find the fault. The computers are on the E1-1 shelf of the electronics bay.
