(h) Put a screwdriver blade between the end of the lug on the carriage spindle and the end of the retainer collar antirotation lug (Detail C, Fig. 401).
NOTE: The screwdriver will not permit the retainer collar to
____ turn when the retainer nut is tightened.
(i)
Remove the screwdriver before you tighten the nut sufficiently to hold it.
(j)
Install the retainer nut.
(k)
Use a main carriage retainer nut wrench to tighten the retainer nut to 4800 pound-inches (542 N-m). After the nut is at the torque, loosen the nut. Tighten and loosen the nut again. Tighten the nut to the required torque value. If the retainer nut is not aligned with a slot in the collar, continue to tighten the nut until the lockbolt hole in the retainer nut is aligned with a slot in the collar.
NOTE: It is necessary to tighten the retainer nut three
____ times to 4800 pound-inches (542 N-m) so the nut will seat correctly on the carriage.
(l)
Remove the bolts which attach the retainer to the locknut.
(m)
Install the locknut and the retainer.
NOTE: It can be necessary to adjust the retainer nut to align
____
the holes in the locknut.
(n)
Install the bolts into the locknut and the retainer nut.
(o)
Install the washers on the aft end of the carriage. Use the number and thickness of the washers to make sure that the nut torque and cotter pin engage correctly.
NOTE: Use a minimum of one (1) MS15795-828 washer in the
____ build-up. Install all additional washers between the MS15795-828 washer and nut.
(p)
Install the nut on the aft end of the carriage.
(q)
Tighten the nut to 1400-2200 pound-inches (158-249 N-m) (View B-B, Fig. 401).
(r)
If the carriage thread end has been modified with a bolt, tighten the nut to 800-1300 pound-inches (90.4-147 N-m) (View B-B, Fig. 401).
(s)
Install the cotter pin.
S 434-012
(3)
Install the failsafe link on the fitting in the carriage:
