BALL SCREW - INSPECTION/CHECK

1. General_______
A. There are four tasks in this procedure. There is a task to examine the ball screw. There is a task to examine the bushing and the trunnion for worn areas. There are also two tasks to measure the backlash of the ball screw with and without a test fixture.
(1)
The inspection of the ball screw is a visual check for surface defects.
(2)
To examine the bushing and the trunnion you must measure the diameters of the bushing and trunnion. You usually do this procedure before you install the ball screw.
(3)
The check of the backlash of the ball screw has these parts.

The removal of the flap track fairing
(b)
The installation of the support equipment
(c)
The removal of the gimbal caps
(d)
A check of the backlash
(e)
The installation of the gimbal caps
(f)
The removal of the support equipment
(g)
The installation of the flap track fairing.

Do this task: "Supply Electrical Power" (Ref 24-22-00/201).

Extend the trailing edge flaps to a position between 10 and 20 units and attach a DO-NOT-MOVE tag.
S 146-004
(3)
Clean the grease from the ball screw forward and aft of the ball screw nut.
S 116-005
(4)
Clean the full length of the ball screw with acetone.
(a)
Dry the ball screw.

(5)
Examine the ball screw for areas where the chrome plate is grey or black.
(a)
Replace the ball screw if you find grey or black areas.

(6)
Examine the ball screw for areas with pits, gouges, corrosion, spalling, brinelling, or ridges of the ball screw threads in the ball groove areas.

Replace the ball screw if you find these conditions.

Put the Airplane Back to Its Usual Condition

(1) Do this task to pressurize hydraulic systems No.1 and 4:
"Pressurize Hydraulic Systems" (Ref 29-11-00/201).

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAR OF THE LE AND TE
_______ FLAPS AND FLAP DRIVE MECHANISMS BEFORE YOU MOVE THE FLAP CONTROL LEVER. WITH HYDRAULIC POWER REMOVED, THE FLAPS WILL MOVE AUTOMATICALLY BY ELECTRICAL POWER WHEN YOU MOVE THE FLAP CONTROL LEVER.
