Manual and automatic control is provided to select the function of each DU. Manual and automatic switching is also provided to select which EIU provides data for the EICAS, CAPT'S EFIS and the F/O'S EFIS. Manual controls are provided to select the system source data for the EFIS.

Display Function Switching
(a) General
1) The following describes the functional switching logic for the display unit personalities which occur automatically due to the failure of the CAPT'S or F/O'S outboard DUs, or the center, upper DU.
2) The functional switching logic for the DU personalities which occur manually due to crew selection through the CAPT'S or F/O's INBD CRT and LWR CRT selector switches located above the CAPT'S and F/O's inboard DU's is also discussed.
3) Normally, the personalities of the DU's, as located on the forward panel, are as indicated below:
Left outboard DU -Captain's PFD Left inboard DU -Captain's ND Upper DU -Main EICAS Lower DU -Auxiliary EICAS Right inboard DU -First officer's ND Right outboard DU -First officer's PFD

4) For a self-detected DU failure, the DU screen will blank and the main EICAS display will indicate an advisory level EICAS message of "IDS CRT".
(b) Automatic Switching
1) Outboard DU (PFD) failure:
a) If the CAPT'S or F/O's PFD fails, the respective inboard DU (ND) switches to function as a PFD. If required, an ND may be manually selected on the lower DU.
b) Upon recovery of the outboard DU, both the outboard and inboard DUs will return to their normal functional operation.
2) Upper DU (main EICAS) failure:
a) If the main EICAS fails, then the lower DU (auxiliary EICAS) switches to function as a main EICAS. If required, an auxiliary EICAS may be manually selected on an inboard DU.
