TRANSFER GEARBOX - INSPECTION/CHECK
___________________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  This transfer gearbox (TGB) inspection examines two areas of the TGB as
 follows:

 (1)
The first inspection is a visual inspection of the external surfaces

 (a)  This inspection includes the TGB housing, the mounts, and the lockwire.

 (2)  
The second inspection uses a borescope to examine the internal surfaces of the TGB.


 (a) Use this inspection if you find the damage as follows:
 1)  If you find pieces of a tab washer in the magnetic chip detectors (MCD). The borescope equipment will permit you to see if the tab washer for the horizontal bevel gear is broken.
 2)  If you find pieces of aluminum in the magnetic chip detectors (MCD). The borescope equipment will permit you to see if the vespel nut has become loose and has damaged the oil nozzle tip.
 3)  If you find metal bearing particles in the magnetic chip detectors (MCD). The borescope equipment will permit you to see if the roller bearing for the input bevel gear is damaged.
 (3)  Unless specified differently, if you find damage which is more than the limits, you must replace the TGB.
 B.  To get access to the TGB, you must open the left fan cowl panel.

 C.  Do the Inspection of the External Surfaces of the Transfer Gearbox

Open the left fan cowl panel (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 S 216-003-C00

 (2)  
Examine the transfer gearbox (TGB) housing for the damage that follows:

 (a)  
Cracks are not permitted

 (b)  
Nicks, dents, scratches are permitted with no maximum quantity if they are not more than 0.035 inch (0.9 mm) in depth after you remove the burrs.

 (c)  
Leakage is not permitted. Tighten the fittins or replace the seal.
