Prepare the Aluminum Rudder for the Installation

Remove the power from the systems A, system B, and standby hydraulic systems (Ref 27-21-00/201).

Make sure the access panels 9512, 9514, and 9515 are removed from the vertical fin.

Make sure the hinge coverplates and fairings on each side of the rudder are removed.

Install the rudder sling on the rudder.

Remove the seals and the seal attachment plates from each side of the vertical fin at the slot for the rudder balance weight.
NOTE: This gives clearance at the balance weights when you put the

Loosen all of the trailing edge seals of the vertical fin and push the seals fully forward.

Loosen the bolts that attach the hinge segments to the rudder front spar. Do not loosen the number 1 hinge segment.
NOTE: The hinge segments must move freely up and down in the shear
____ plates. You should have removed all the bearing bars with the graphite rudder. The bearing bars are not used with the aluminum rudder.

Apply corrosion preventive compound to the hinge bolts.

Install the Aluminum Rudder
S 424-014
(1)
Put the rudder in its position on the vertical fin using the rudder sling. Use ropes to control the rudder.

Install and tighten the hinge bolts at the No. 1, 7, 2, 3, and 6 rudder hinges in that sequence. Tighten the hinge bolts on the No. 1 and 2 hinges to 95 to 110 pound-inches (190 pound-inches maximum to align the cotter pin). Tighten the hinge bolts on the No. 3, 6 and 7 hinges to 60 to 85 pound-inches (140 pound-inches maximum to align the cotter pin).
NOTE: Attach the bonding jumpers at the applicable hinges when you
