Do a Test of the Rudder

 (1)  
Disconnect the forward end of the power control unit (PCU) from the airplane.

Move the forward end of the PCU right and forward to make sure it does not hit the rudder clevis.

Make sure there is clearance between all the seals and the forward part of the rudder and the balance weights.


 NOTE: Manually move the rudder approximately 7 degrees in each

 direction to examine the clearance.

 CAUTION:_______USE THE WOOD BLOCK WHEN YOU MOVE THE RUDDER MANUALLY. PUT THE FORCE ON THE BLOCK APPROXIMATELY 47 INCHES FROM THE RUDDER HINGE LINE BETWEEN RUDDER STATIONS 13.33 AND 31.65. DO NOT APPLY A FORCE OF MORE THAN 50 POUNDS ON THE RUDDER. YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER IF YOU APPLY THE FORCE INCORRECTLY.
 (4)  
Use the spring scale and the wood block to manually move the rudder through its full travel range.

 (a)  
Make sure the rudder moves smoothly and freely.

Measure the force that is necessary to move the rudder slowly left from the neutral to the full travel position.

 (a)  
Make sure the force is less than 25 pounds.

 (b)  
Make sure the rudder moves left a minimum of 22.87 inches from the neutral position.

Measure the force that is necessary to move the rudder slowly right from the neutral to the full travel position.

 I. Continue To Install the Rudder
 S 434-040
 (1)  
Connect the rudder PCU between the vertical fin and the rudder (AMM 27-21-91/401).

Connect the standby actuator to the rudder (AMM 27-21-24/401).

Make sure the mismatch between the rudder and the fin is correct at each of the 14 rib locations (Fig. 401).

Adjust the seals at the trailing edge of the vertical fin and tighten them.

Adjust the balance weight seals on the vertical fin and tighten the seal retainers.

Move the rudder to its neutral position.

 (a)  
Adjust the clearance for the lower (rudder to body) seal (Fig. 401): 1) Loosen the bolts and nuts. 2) Adjust the seal until the gap between the rudder seal and

 body seal is -0.04 to +0.02 inch. 3) Tighten the bolts and nuts.

 (b)  
Make sure the seal does not cause a blockage at the left and right rudder drain holes.

Do a check of the free play of the rudder hinge and PCU bearing (AMM 27-21-00/501).
