Remove access panel 324FR to get access to the feel centering and trim mechanism.

Pressurize the hydraulic systems (Ref 29-11-00/201).

Test the Upper Rudder Hinge Bearing and the Rudder Power Control Package Bearing Play

 (1)  
Put the rudder pedals and the rudder trim switch at neutral and do the step that follows:

 (a)  
Attach the DO-NOT-OPERATE tags to the rudder pedals, the rudder trim switch, the elevator control trim switch, and the yoke.

 (2)  
Make sure the FLT CONTROL HYD POWER TAIL switches on the P461 Pilots' Overhead Maintenance Panel are in the NORM position.

 (3)  
Do a test of the upper rudder play.

 (a)  
Install the rig pin R4 in the feel, centering and trim mechanism (Fig. 601).

 (b)  
Install the upper rudder flutter test fixture (Fig. 602).


 CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY A POINT LOAD AND A LOAD OF MORE THAN 5 PSI ON
_______ THE RUDDER SURFACES WHEN YOU MOVE THE RUDDER BY AN EXTERNAL FORCE. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER SURFACES.
 (c)  
Use the force gage to push the left side of the upper rudder at approximately 11 inches above the lower edge and 11 inches forward of the trailing edge with a force of 8-12 pound and hold.

 (d)  
Set the dial indicator to zero.

 (e)  
Use the force gage to push the right side of the upper rudder at approximately 11 inches above the lower edge and 11 inches forward of the trailing edge with a force of 8-12 pound and hold.

 (f)  
Make sure that the indication on the dial indicator is less than 0.21 inch.

 (g)  
Remove the rudder flutter test fixture.

 (h)  
Remove the rig pin R4.

 (4)
Release the pressure in the hydraulic systems (Ref 29-11-00/201).

 (5)  
Install the access panel.

Remove the nose gear rig and tow safety pin from the nose gear steering metering valve module.

 RUDDER HINGES - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

 1.  General_______
 A.  This procedure gives the instructions to remove and install the hinges for the upper and lower rudders.
 B.  The upper and the lower rudders are attached to the vertical fin by 11 hinges. There are four hinges for the lower rudder, and seven hinges for the upper rudder. The hinges are referred to as No. 1 through No. 11, from the bottom to the top of the rudders.
 C.  There are three types of hinges used for the rudders. The parts of the hinges that are almost the same are not interchangeable.
 D.  This procedure has four tasks. The first two are the removal and installation of hinges No. 1, 4, 5, 9, 10 and 11. The second two are the removal and installation of hinges No. 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8.
