Make sure the VALVE CLOSED lights for the four TAIL switches are on.

Do these steps to do a test of the upper rudder.
(a)
Find the switches for the FLT CONTROL HYD POWER on the Pilots' Overhead Maintenance Panel, P461. 1) Put the TAIL switch 1 in the NORM position.
NOTE: Keep the TAIL switches 2, 3, and 4 in the SHUTOFF

position.
a) Make sure the VALVE CLOSED light for TAIL switch 1 goes off.
(b)
Move the rudder pedals and make sure the upper rudder moves smoothly in the correct direction. 1) Make sure the rudder can move to its full travel positions. 2) Make sure the rudder position shows correctly on the flight
controls maintenance page of EICAS.
(c)
Put the TAIL switch 3 in the NORM position and TAIL switch 1 in the SHUTOFF position. 1) Make sure the VALVE CLOSED light for TAIL switch 3 goes
off. 2) Make sure the VALVE CLOSED lights for TAIL switches 1, 2, and 4 are on.

Put all four of the TAIL switches in the NORM position.
(b)
Shake the rudder pedals to make sure the rudder is in the center position.
(c)
Use the rudder trim switch to get the rudder trim indicator to show zero units.
(d)
Look at the EICAS status page for the flight controls.
