Push the right rudder pedal fully forward. 1) Measure the travel of the rudder pedal from its center position. 2) Make sure the travel is 4.05-4.20 inches measured along the floor. 3) Make sure the flight controls maintenance page of EICAS


 shows a rudder pedal travel of 19.5-23.5 degrees right. 4) Release the rudder pedal.

Procedure

 (a)  
Use a clamp to attach a square to the seat track as a reference point to measure from.

 (b)  Measure the free play (forward and rearward) of the rudder pedals.
 NOTE: This is the free play from the rudder pedals to the
____ forward quadrant. Make sure the forward quadrant does not move.
 1)  Make sure the free play is a maximum of 1/8 inch (forward and rearward).
 J.  Rudder Pedal Force Test

General

 (a)  
Do this procedure for each of the four rudder pedals.

Procedure

 (a)  
Remove the screw between the steering rod and the rudder forward quadrant to disconnect the steering for the nose landing gear.

 (b)  
Install the rig pin, E-1, at the bottom of the Captain's control column (Fig. 501).


 NOTE: The rig pin E-1 is installed for safety reason to
____ prevent movement of the elevators while you do work on the rudder. You can use a tag to alert personnel not to move the control column with the rig pin installed.
 (c)  
Supply hydraulic power (Ref 29-11-00/201).

 (d)  
Find the switches for the FLT CONTROL HYD POWER on the Pilots' Overhead Maintenance Panel, P461. 1) Put the four TAIL switches in the NORM position.

 (e)  
Shake the rudder pedals to make sure they are in their center position.

 (f)  
Make sure the flight controls maintenance page of EICAS shows the rudder pedals are at -0.3 to 0.3 degrees.

 (g)  
Use the rudder pedal force check tool to push the rudder pedal forward 0.45-0.55 inch. 1) Measure the force to push the rudder pedal at this point.


 NOTE: You must measure the force while the rudder pedal
____ moves away from the neutral position. If the pedal moves more than the specified distance, you must repeat the test and start with the pedal at neutral position.
 2)  Make sure the force is between 24.5 and 35.0 pounds.

 (h)  
Push the rudder pedal fully forward.

 1)  Make sure the flight controls maintenance page of EICAS shows 29.5-33.5 degrees for the lower rudder.

 (i)  
Use the rudder pedal force check tool to push the rudder until EICAS shows 27.0 to 29.5 degrees for the lower rudder. 1) Measure the force to push the rudder pedal at this point.


 NOTE: You must measure the force while the rudder pedal
____ moves away from the neutral position. If the pedal moves more than the specified distance, you must repeat the test and start with the pedal at neutral position.
 2)  Make sure the force is between 55.0 and 79.0 pounds.
 (j)  
When you complete the test for all four rudder pedals, connect the steering rod to the rudder forward quadrant.

Bearing Play Test for the Rudder Hinges and Power Control Unit

 (1)  
Prepare for the test.

 (a)  
Set the rudder trim to zero.

 (b)  
Attach DO-NOT-OPERATE tags to the rudder pedals and the rudder trim switch.


 NOTE: It is not necessary to move the rudder pedals or rudder
____ trim switch during this test.
