NOSE GEAR AND DOORS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_______________________________________________
1. General_______
A. The nose gear supports the forward end of the fuselage and controls the direction of the airplane while it is moving on the ground. The nose gear is hydraulically operated to retract forward and up into a wheel well, a recess in the lower nose compartment. Shocks from the impact of landing and rolling over bumps on the ground are absorbed by a shock strut. The shock strut contains oil and is charged with compressed air or nitrogen. For steering, the shock strut inner cylinder turns inside the outer cylinder.
