(1)
Remove the tire/wheel assembly from the axle (AMM 32-45-02/401).
S 884-017
(2)
Decrease the temperature of the axle for the removal of the axle sleeve:
NOTE: The cold temperature will decrease the axle diameter.
____ When you subsequently apply heat to the axle sleeve, the fit between the axle sleeve and the axle will loosen.
WARNING:_______DO NOT GET THE DRY ICE ON YOUR SKIN. THE DRY ICE IS FROZEN CARBON DIOXIDE AT A TEMPERATURE OF APPROXIMATELY -120°F. THE COLD TEMPERATURE OF THE CARBON DIOXIDE CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
(a) Fill the inner diameter of the axle with the dry ice.
NOTE: When the steam from the dry ice almost stops, the axle
____ temperature will be near the temperature of the dry ice (-120°F). This is the recommended condition.
(b) Add more dry ice to the inner diameter of the axle before you install the axle sleeve puller.
NOTE: This will keep the axle at a constant temperature when
____ you apply heat to the axle sleeve.
