CONTAINERIZED CARGO RESTRAINING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
__________________________________________________________________
General (Fig. 1)
_______
 A.  The containerized cargo compartments are equipped with a cargo restraining system for guiding and securing containerized cargo. The restraining system, with the cargo handling system, permits the efficient loading or unloading of either compartment by one man. The restraining system contains semi-automatic doorsill restraints, center guides, side guides, splitter rails, end stops, container stops and pallet locks. All retractable items in the restraining system are manually operated except for the center guides in the compartment interior which are automatically retractable. Removal/installation procedures for all items are obvious and will not be detailed in the manual.
 B.  Each container compartment has five restraints located in the doorsill area. The three aft restraints in each doorway have semiautomatic features. In the down position they allow free passage of containers or pallets into the doorway, but inhibit rollback. They also provide guidance for longitudinal movement. In the up position, they provide lateral and vertical restraint of cargo located in the doorway on the ball transfer panels. Semiautomatic restraints are completely retractable for unloading. The two forward restraints in each doorway have no semiautomatic features, but are retractable as required for loading and unloading. In the up position, they provide lateral and vertical restraint and act as a guide for containers being moved in the longitudinal direction.

Manually Retractable Center Guides
__________________________________
 A.  Retractable center guides are installed along the centerline in the doorway of each compartment. The center guides are extended to help the longitudinal movement of half-width containers into and out of the compartment interior. The center guides, when extended, prevent the lateral and vertical movement of the half-width containers. The center guides are retracted to permit the movement of full-width containers or pallets into or out of the compartment.
 B.  The manually retractable center guides are spring-loaded to the retracted position. When the guides are manually lifted, detent pins hold them in the extended position. The retraction toggle disengages the detent pin to release the guide to the retracted position. Lever type locks hold the doorway guides in the extended position.

 4.  Automatically Retractable Center Guides
_______________________________________
 A.  Automatically retractable center guides are installed along the centerline in the compartment interior. The center guides automatically retract as a full-width container or pallet moves longitudinally over them. The center guides will automatically extend (under spring action) as the full-width container or pallet moves clear of the guides.
 5.  Side Guides
___________
 A.  Side guides are located down the sides of each compartment to provide lateral and vertical restraint and to guide longitudinal movement of containers. The guides located opposite the doorway have no rollers and are constructed to withstand the impact of containers moving into the compartment. All guides except those opposite the doorway, contain rollers to facilitate container movement. Each side guide is designed to accept a 2000-pound tiedown fitting for additional baggage/cargo tiedown purposes.
