 3. Fuel Filter Cover Attachments Inspection

 A. General
 (1)  The fuel filter cover and its attachments for the CFM56-3 series engines have 4 possible configurations.
 (a)  
Configuration One - Initial release, engines Pre-CFMI-SB 73-125 and Pre-CFMI-SB 73-A129.

 (b)  
Configurations Two and Three - Subsequent release, engines Post-CFMI-SB 73-125 and Pre-CFMI-SB 73-A125.


 NOTE: CFMI SB 73-125 introduced the self-aligning nut and
____ washer modification to the fuel filter cover design.
 NOTE: Configurations Two and Three appear visually to be
____ the same, but in fact are different in design. The hardware for Configurations Two and Three is not interchangeable, and should not be mixed.

(c)  Configuration Four - Latest release, engines Post-CFMI-SB 73-125 and Post-CFMI-SB 73-A129.
 NOTE: CFMI SB 73-A129 introduced the D-head bolt modification

 to the fuel filter cover.

 B.  Procedure
 S 026-008-C00
 (1)  
Open the left fan cowl panel (AMM 71-11-02/201).

 S 416-007-C00

 (2)  
Remove the fuel filter (AMM 73-11-02/401).

 S 716-013-C00

 (3)  
ENGINES PRE-CFMI-SB 73-125 AND PRE-CFMI-SB 73-A129;
 (CONFIGURATION ONE);
 Do an inspection of the fuel filter parts assembly.


 (a)  
Examine the bolt (40) threads and the washers (30) for evidence of nicks or dents. If damage is present, discard the bolt or washer.

 (b)  
Examine the main fuel pump housing insert for evidence of damage, such as a pulled-out insert, insert movement, or damaged insert threads.

 


 NOTE: The original depth of the helicoil insert when
____ installed is from 0.010 inch (0.25 mm) to 0.054 inch
 (1.37 mm), or a quarter to one-and-a-half thread pitch below the parting surface of the fuel pump housing.
 1)  If the insert is pulled out, loose, or the insert thread is damaged, then do one of the following procedures to correct the problem: a) Repair the insert (AMM 73-11-02/801). b) Replace the main fuel pump (AMM 73-11-01/401).

c)  Remove the pump and have it changed to the Post-CFMI-SB 73-A129 configuration.

 (4)  ENGINES POST-CFMI-SB 73-125 AND PRE-CFMI-SB 73-A129; (CONFIGURATION TWO); Do an inspection of the fuel filter parts assembly.
 (a)  Inspect the bolts (100), self aligning nuts (120), washer (130) and self aligning washers (130) for evidence of nicks or dents damage to the threads or spherical face. If present, discard the part.
