3. MEC Installation

A. General
CAUTION: DO NOT INSTALL A MEC UNIT LISTED AS SUSPECT IN CFMI SB 73A-077.
_______ REPLACE WITH A NON-SUSPECT MEC UNIT. A SUSPECT UNIT MAY CAUSE AN IN-FLIGHT SHUT DOWN.

Obey this caution during all of this task.
(2)
Main Engine Contols (MEC's) that have fluorocarbon (Viton) external seals (Pos- CFMI-SB 73-084) can leak fuel for a short time when they are below -29.2 degrees Farenheit (-34 Celsius) (Modification 1) or below -40 Farenheit (-40 Celsius) (Modification 2). Refer to AMM 71-00-00/501 for the leakage limits.

WARNING:_______DO NOT LET ENGINE OIL STAY ON YOUR SKIN. USE ENGINE OIL IN AREA WITH GOOD VENTILATION. ENGINE OIL IS POISONOUS AND CAN BE ABSORBED THROUGH YOUR SKIN. ENGINE OIL FUMES CAN IRRITATE YOUR RESPIRATORY TRACT.
CAUTION: DO NOT LET ALKALINE CLEANING FLUID GET INTO THE ENGINE OIL.
_______ VERY SMALL QUANTITIES OF THIS FLUID CAN CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL. DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
(1) Obey the above Warning and Caution through all this procedure.

CAUTION: REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP/MEC SEAL GASKET IF IT IS DAMAGED
_______ (AMM 70-30-01/201). USE NEW O-RINGS AND GASKETS WHEN YOU INSTALL THE FITTINGS IN THE MEC. DAMAGED SEAL GASKETS AND USED O-RINGS CAN CAUSE OIL AND/OR FUEL LEAKAGE.
CAUTION: USE TWO WRENCHES TO INSTALL THE TUBE COUPLING NUTS, ONE TO HOLD
_______ THE FITTING AND ONE TO TIGHTEN THE COUPLING NUT. THIS WILL PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE HARDWARE.
(2)
Do not remove the protective caps from the MEC ports until you install the fittings.

Install new O-rings, lubricated with petrolatum, on the fittings.

Install the fittings that follow in the applicable MEC ports:
NOTE: This step is not necessary if the MEC to be installed has all

the fittings installed.
NOTE: The VSV ROD fitting is permanently installed on the MEC
____
and is not removed.
(a)
Tighten the VBV OPEN fitting to 270-300 pound-inches
(30-34 Newton meters).
