 FLIGHT DATA RECORDER SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General (Fig. 1)_______
 A.  The flight data recorder system digitally records, on magnetic tape, selected signals received during the last 25 hours of airplane operation. The signals are received from other airplane systems and sensors.
 B.  The system consists of a flight data recorder, accelerometer, trip and date encoder and the flight recorder TEST-NORMAL switch and OFF light on the FLIGHT RECORDER AND MACH AIRSPEED WARNING module.
 C.  The flight data recorder is capable of recording: -1000 to 50,000 feet altitude, 100 to 450 knots airspeed, O degrees thru 360° heading, -3 to +6g's of vertical acceleration, and discrete signals for recording an ATC event.
 D.  An underwater locator beacon (ULB) is installed on the front panel of the flight data recorder. The ULB is a battery powered unit, which activates immediately upon immersion in water.
 E.  An accelerometer is installed near the airplane center of gravity on the aft side of the right main wheel well forward bulkhead at station 663. Access to the accelerometer is through the wheel well.
 F.  The trip and date encoder and FLIGHT RECORDER AND MACH AIRSPEED WARNING MODULE are located on the aft overhead panel P5 in the control cabin.
 G.  All input data are FAA mandatory parameters. Data are received in analog and discrete format. These data are recorded and stored in a crash proof container in the flight data recorder.
 H.  The system is turned on automatically when the airplane is in flight, or on the ground when an engine is operating. The system may also be turned on by the TEST-NORMAL switch on the flight data recorder control panel.
 2.  Flight Data Recorder (Fig. 1)____________________
 A.  The flight data recorder is installed above the ceiling panels at station 947, WL290, LBL10.
 B.  The flight data recorder records the output data for the last 25 hours of airplane operation. Data is stored on the 1/4-inch wide magnetic tape. The tape and transport are located in a crash-proof container within the flight data recorder. The unit weighs 28 lbs and is housed in a 1/2-long container.
 C.  The front panel of the flight data recorder contains a test connector and an underwater locator beacon. The test connector lets you connect a portable tester to the flight data recorder. The underwater locator beacon is a battery operated unit which transmits an ultrasonic signal when the unit is immersed in water.
