(1) The FDR records the output data for the last 25 hours of airplane operation. Data is stored on the 1/4-inch wide, 450 feet long magnetic tape. The tape and transport are located in a crash-proof container within the DFDR. The unit weighs 28 lbs.

The tape transport assembly protects the recorded data against fire and impact. This protection includes an inner aluminum cover, isothermal protection shield, an outer stainless steel casing and an exterior stainless steel dust cover. This design enables the DFDR to meet a test of 20,000 pounds of crush per axis, and provides impact protection of 1000 g's for 5 msec. When the equipment is subjected to high thermal environments the isothermal insulation maintains the inner chamber at a safe temperature.

The FDR front panel contains a BITE indicator, a test connector and an underwater locator beacon. The recorder test connector allows a portable tester to be connected to the recorder. The underwater locator beacon is a battery operated unit which transmits an ultrasonic signal when the unit is immersed in water.
4. Accelerometer_____________
A. The 3-axis accelerometer, M517, measures vertical, lateral and longitudinal acceleration and provides a separate output signal with respect to ground for each. Excitation for the accelerometer is 28v dc supplied by the FDAU. The accelerometer is a self-contained sealed unit mounted on the aft side of the forward wall of the right wheel well at station 664. Access to the accelerometer is through the wheel well.
5. Underwater Locator Beacon_________________________
A. The underwater locator beacon is a battery operated unit that transmits pulses when immersed in water. The ULB has a detection range of 2,000 to 4,000 yards and an operating life of approximately 30 days. It is mounted to the front panel of the flight recorder.
6. Flight Recorder Test Module (Fig. 1)___________________________
A. The flight recorder test module, part of the FLIGHT RECORDER AND AIRSPEED WARNING MODULE, contains the flight recorder TEST NORMAL switch and an OFF light.

If the flight recorder system is energized and the TEST NORMAL switch is put in the TEST position, the flight recorder will be in operation.
(2)
The OFF light will be off during either of the conditions which follow:
(a)
The flight recorder is in operation.
(b)
The flight recorder is not installed.
(3)
The OFF light will be on during any of the conditions which follow:
(a)
The MASTER TEST switch is in the TEST position.
(b)
The STATUS line from the DFDR indicates an AC power failure.
(c)
The BITE OUT line from the FDAU indicates a BITE failure.
