FLIGHT DATA RECORDER SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_______________________________________________________
1. General (Fig. 1, 2)_______
A. The digital flight data recorder system digitally records, selected signals received from various airplane systems and sensors. The last 25 hours of airplane operation are recorded on magnetic tape in the flight recorder.
B. The system has these units:
(1)
Flight Data Acquisition Unit (FDAU)
(2)
Flight Data Recorder (FDR)
(3)
Accelerometer
(4)
Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB)
(5)
Flight Recorder Test Module
C. The FDR is installed above the ceiling panel at station 947.
D. The ULB is installed on the FDR front panel. The ULB is battery powered, and it operates when it is in water.
E. An accelerometer is installed near the airplane center of gravity on the aft side of the right main wheel well forward bulkhead at station 663. Access to the accelerometer is through the wheel well.
F. The FDAU is installed in the main equipment center on electronics shelf E2.
G. The flight recorder test module is part of the flight recorder and Mach airspeed warning test module. It is installed on the aft overhead panel P5 in the control cabin.
H. Data is transmitted from various systems and sensors to provide information about the state of the airplane. This data is received by the FDAU where it is formatted. The FDAU sends the formatted data to the DFDR where it is recorded on magnetic tape.
I. The system is turned on automatically when the airplane is in flight, or on the ground when either engine is operating. The system may also be turned on by placing the TEST-NORMAL switch on the flight recorder test module in the TEST position.
2. Flight Data Acquisition Unit (FDAU) (Fig. 3)___________________________________
A. All data to be recorded is sent to the FDAU. The FDAU processes and prepares all data for recording. Electronic circuits in the FDAU provide isolation, signal preconditioning, multiplexing, scaling, synchronization, and converting the various input signal forms to a digital format. Selected signals are then sent to the FDR for recording.
