 HORIZONTAL STABILIZER CENTER SECTION HINGE BEARING - INSPECTION/CHECK

 1.  General
_______
 A.  This procedure has one task. The task is an inspection of the horizontal stabilizer center section hinge bearing.
 B.  The task is to calculate the play of the horizontal stabilizer. The play of the horizontal stabilizer is the total of the play of the jackscrew and the hinge mechanisms.

 2.  Horizontal Stabilizer Center Section Hinge Bearing Wear Limits (Fig. 601)

 A.  Standard Tools and Equipment
 (1)  
Two weights of 220 |25 pounds each (You can use the weights of two persons. Measure and write the weight of each person and the total weight. The difference between the two persons weight should be not more than 10 pounds. Alternatively, you can use two weights, such as bars and shot).

 (2)  
Dial Indicator - Accurate to 0.001 inch

 (3)  
Mounting device to hold the dial indicator against the bulkhead structure (for example a suction cup).

Procedure:


 S 226-003
 (1)  
Measure the play of the hinge joint of the stabilizer center section (which is referred to as X for the left joint and Y for the right joint):

 (a)  
Set the stabilizer at the 3 units of trim (neutral position).

 (b)  
Attach the dial indicator to the left side of the fuselage at body station 1154. 1) Make sure that the plunger pushes against the stabilizer

 lower surface at a minimum of 1/8 inch.
