At the stabilizer rear spar, remove the cotter pin and the nut retainers (4) from the bolts (1).

 (b)  
Make a record of each bolt length and location.


 NOTE: You can use this for the installation.

 (c)  At the stabilizer rear spar, remove the three bolts (1), washers (2 and 5), and nuts (3).
 NOTE: If it is necessary, adjust the tension in the sling to
____ help remove the mounting bolts.
 (d)  
At the stabilizer front spar, remove the cotter pins, nuts (7), washers (6 and 8) two bolts (11), shims (9 and 10), and washers (12).

 (e)  
Lift the stabilizer outboard section clear of the airplane.


 1)  Move the stabilizer outboard section out horizontally, then lower it to the support stand.

 (The -58 cable is used to remove or install the stabilizer without the elevator attached and the -56 cable is used to remove or install the stabilizer with the elevator attached)

Procedure
 S 494-015
 (1)  
Install the horizontal stabilizer sling (Fig. 404):

 S 644-044

 (2)  
AIRPLANES WITHOUT CRES WASHERS BONDED TO CENTER SECTION LUGS; Apply corrosion preventive compound on the bolt shanks, washers, and all mating surfaces on the front and rear spar bolts.


 NOTE: If you complete SB 55-1058, you do not need to do this step.

Apply a layer of grease to the inner and flange surfaces of the bushings in the front and the rear spar fittings.

Apply anti-seize compound on bolts threads and nut threads on the front and rear spar bolts.

Lift the horizontal stabilizer to its position.

Align the stabilizer with the front and rear spar fittings.

Attach the stabilizer outboard section to the center section:

 (a)
Temporarily install the bolts (11) with the bolt heads aft.
