(d) Measure the play of the right hinge joint: 1) Attach the dial indicator to the right side. 2) Set the dial indicator to zero. 3) Slowly add the two weights to the left stabilizer end near
the front spar. 4) Write down the value from the dial indicator. 5) Slowly remove the two weights. 6) Calculate the play of the right bearing:
Y = D - W Where D = value on the dial indicator W = 0.0000155 multiplied by the total of the two weights
NOTE: If the quantity is negative, Y = 0.

Calculate the play of the stabilizer jackscrew joint (which is referred to as Z):
(a)
Make sure that the stabilizer is at 3 units of trim.
(b)
Open the 3701 access door.
(c)
Attach a dial indicator to the body station 1088 bulkhead structure. 1) Make sure the plunger pushes against the stabilizer lower
surface at a minimum of 1/8 inch.
2) Set the indicator to zero.
(d)
Measure the free play of the stabilizer jackscrew joint:
1) Slowly add one weight each to the top surface of the left and the right stabilizer, adjacent to the fuselage along the stabilizer front spar.
2) Write down the value from the dial indicator. 3) Slowly remove the weights.

4) Calculate the play of the stabilizer jackscrew joint: Z = (D multiplied by 1.25) - (Wt multiplied by 1.25) Where D = value on the dial indicator Wt = 0.0000255 multiplied by the total of the two weights
NOTE:____ If the quantity is negative, Z = 0.
(3) S 976-005Calculate the total stabilizer play (which is referred to as H): (a) Use the values X, Y, and Z to calculate H:
X + Y H = ..... 2 + Z
(4) S 226-009Do a check of the X, Y, Z, and H dimensions: (a) If X is more than 0.060 inch, replace the left hinge bearing. (b) If Y is more than 0.060 inch, replace the right hinge bearing. (c) If Z is more than 0.05 inch, disassemble the stabilizer jackscrew (Ref 27-41-81/401), and repair the jackscrew, if it is necessary. (d) If H is more than 0.0505 inch, replace the stabilizer center section hinge bearings (Ref 27-41-31/401). 1) If it is necessary, disassemble and adjust the stabilizer jackscrew (Ref 27-41-81/401)
