737-300/400/500MAINTENANCE MANUAL
Do not use the meter probes to examine the circuits at the airplane connectors. The meter probes can cause damage to the contacts in the connectors. Connect the test instruments to a test connector and then use the test connector to make the connections to the airplane connectors. Be careful when you use the airplane connectors, you can cause damage to the electrical connector, the pin or the wires. If you cause damage to a connector, carefully clean and repair it.One or more of these indications will show when there is a failure in the electrical generation system:
(1)
A signal on the annunciator panel
(2)
A Generator or a bus failure will show on the pilot's overhead panel.
(3)
A part of the electrical system will not operate correctly.
(4)
The automatic safety devices will open defective circuits.
(5)
The airplane meters show indications that are not usual.Identify what happened at the time of the failure. When the problem is accurately identified, you can find the cause faster. The Figure 101 shows one or more possible causes of the problem for most conditions. The POSSIBLE CAUSES column in Fig. 101 shows the paragraphs in this section. Each paragraph contains a procedure to isolate the possible causes of the problem.
AC Generator
(1)
A drive shaft or a stub shaft failure.
(a)
Operate the engine with the generator control relay open.
(b)
Look at the generator residual voltage to make sure that the generator turns. 1) You must find 12 to 19 VAC between the terminals T1, T2 and
T3 of the voltage regulator and ground. 2) If you do not find the correct voltage, replace the ac generator.
WARNING:_______BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO A TEST IN THE ELECTRICAL PANELS. THE POWER IS ON THE METER TERMINALS AND THE WIRES IN THE PANELS. AN ELECTRICAL SHOCK CAN CAUSE INJURIES.
(2) The exciter field has an open circuit or a short circuit.
