Procedure


 S 014-005
 (1)
Get access to the E3-1 rack.

Before you touch the battery charger, refer to (AMM 20-40-12/201).

Install the battery charger (AMM 20-10-07/201).


 (a) Tighten the main battery charger stud terminal nuts as follows:
 NOTE: If you use the plain nut on the main battery charger
____ studs, you must use a plain washer and lock washer under the nut. If you use the self-locking nut, use only the plain washer under the nut.
 1)  Tighten the stainless steel self-locking nut on the + (positive) terminal of the battery charger to 190 +/- 10 pound-inch.
 2) Tighten the stainless steel plain nut on the + (positive) terminal of the battery charger to 185 +/- 10 pound-inch. 3) Tighten the stainless steel self-locking nut on the -(negative) terminal to 140 +/- 5 pound-inch.

 4)  Tighten the stainless steel plain nut on the - (negative) terminal to 135 +/- 5 pound-inch.
 (4)  S 864-016Close these circuit breakers and remove DO-NOT-CLOSE tags: (a) C809, BAT CHARGER, P6 PNL (b) C842, ALT BAT CHARGER, P6 PNL (c) C142, BATTERY CHARGER, J9 BATTERY SHIELD
 (5)  S 714-007Do a test of the battery charger (AMM 24-31-21/501).

 BATTERY CHARGER - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
_________________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  This is a test of all three modes of operation of the pulse-type battery charger (M5).
 (1)  
In the charge mode, it charges the battery with no limit on the current. Then, it makes a sequence of short pulses of current to keep the cells equally charged.

 (2)  
In the protection mode, the battery charger will not operate.

 (3)  
In the transformer-rectifier (TR) mode, it supplies 28 volts dc to the hot battery bus.

 B.  
The battery charger will not go into the charge mode when the external power cable is connected. It stays in the TR mode.

 C.  
The battery charger is on the E3-1 electrical shelf. It uses 3 phase, 400 Hz power from the ground service bus.

Prepare for the Operational Test

 (1)  
Turn the dc meters switch on the P5-13 panel to BAT.

Supply electrical power from the APU or engine generators (Ref 24-22-00/201).

 NOTE: To get accurate results from this test, you must not connect
____ the external power cable. If you connect the external power cable, the battery charger will stay in the TR mode. The battery will not sufficiently charge in the TR mode.
