(5) Decrease the temperature of the axle for the removal of the brake housing bushing:
NOTE: The cold temperature will decrease the axle diameter.
____ When you subsequently apply heat to the brake housing bushing, the fit between the brake housing bushing and the axle will loosen.
(a) Put a cloth tightly in the axle at the location where the axle engages with the truck beam.
NOTE: The cloth will supply protection for the components in
____ the other end of the axle. When you fill the axle with the dry ice, the cloth will keep the dry ice in the correct end of the axle.
WARNING:_______DO NOT GET THE DRY ICE ON YOUR SKIN. THE DRY ICE IS FROZEN CARBON DIOXIDE AT A TEMPERATURE OF APPROXIMATELY -120°F. THE COLD TEMPERATURE OF THE CARBON DIOXIDE CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
(b) Fill the inner diameter of the axle with the dry ice.
NOTE: When the steam from the dry ice almost stops, the axle
____ temperature will be near the temperature of the dry ice (-120°F). This is the recommended condition.
(c) Add more dry ice to the inner diameter of the axle before you install the axle sleeve puller.
NOTE: This will keep the axle at a constant temperature when
____ you apply heat to the brake housing bushing.
S 494-011
(6)
Install the axle sleeve puller on the brake housing bushing.
(a)
Do not remove the dry ice from the axle before you install the axle sleeve puller.
