BODY GEAR - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_____________________________________
1. General (Fig. 1)
_______
A. Each body gear has a truck assembly with two one-piece axles and four wheels. Attached to the truck are the shock strut, lower torsion link, and positioning actuator mechanism. The four brake equalizing rods are attached to structure under the truck. Two hydraulic actuators attach to the shock strut outer cylinder and upper end of the lower torsion link to provide body gear steering. The positioning actuator is above the forward half of the truck. The aft end of positioning actuator is affixed to the base of the inner cylinder. The forward end attaches to the truck directly above the front axle. The lower end of the two-piece drag strut is attached to the shock strut outer cylinder at a point forward and slightly inboard of center. The side brace attaches to the inboard side of the shock strut outer cylinder. A jury strut attaches the drag strut to a keel beam attach fitting. The jury strut is attached to the two drag strut segments with a common pin. In addition, each body gear has hydraulic and electrical tubing and cables to control positioning and extension and retraction.
B. The shock strut assembly attaches to a trunnion at the upper aft side of the outer cylinder. The trunnion fits into the trunnion fittings on the keel beam and aft wall of the body gear wheel well. The outboard end of the trunnion has a swivel housing and large bearing which is housed in a forging on the trunnion support. The shock strut is charged with hydraulic fluid and compressed nitrogen to provide a shock absorbing medium. Replaceable sleeves are assembled over the axles to provide a mounting for wheel bearings and to protect axles from damage.
C. Refer to 32-33-00/001 for information on body gear extension and
retraction.
2. Body Gear Trunnion (Fig. 2)
__________________
A. The body gear trunnion provides the hinge for body gear retraction. The trunnion is mounted between the rear wall of the body gear wheel well and a keel beam attach fitting. The outboard end of the trunnion pivots in a swivel housing and spherical bearing mounted in the support beam. The top end of the side brace is attached to a lug on the underside of the trunnion. The trunnion is machined from a high tensile strength steel forging.
