 3.  System Test - Weather Radar System__________________________________
 A. General
 (1)  
The system test supplies a full test of the weather radar system but does not include all display tests. Additional display test are in the operational test. The system test includes a test of the display and the gain functions. The display and gain test does a check of radar echoes that are received from external targets. The system test also does a check of the precision of the antenna position when pitch and roll input signals are supplied from the IRS (inertial referance system).

Point the airplane away from all large metal objects and to an open area. The antenna scan can include hills or mountains at different heights in the distance.

 WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE THE WEATHER RADAR WHILE FUEL IS ADDED OR
_______ REMOVED FROM THE AIRPLANE. DO NOT TRANSMIT RF ENERGY WHILE FUEL IS ADDED OR REMOVED IN AREA 200 FEET OR LESS OF THE ANTENNA. THIS CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION.
 DO NOT OPERATE THE WEATHER RADAR IN A HANGAR OR OTHER ENCLOSURE.
 DO NOT OPERATE THE WEATHER RADAR WHILE THE AIRPLANE IS IN A HANGAR OR OTHER ENCLOSURE. MAKE SURE NO PERSONS ARE IN THE AREA 15 FEET OR LESS FROM THE ANTENNA WHEN IT TRANSMITS RF ENERGY. RF ENERGY CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
 CAUTION:_______ WHEN AN LRU FAILURE MESSAGE SHOWS, STOP THE WEATHER RADAR
 SYSTEM TEST.  IF YOU DO NOT STOP THE WEATHER RADAR, THE
 RESULT WILL BE DAMAGE TO THE DEFECTIVE LRU OR OTHER SYSTEM

 COMPONENTS.

 (a)  
Push the WX mode switch on the WXR indicator.

 (b)  
Turn the GAIN control on the WXR indicator close to but not on the PRE-SET position.

 (c)  
Set the RANGE switch on the WXR indicator in each range position in sequence. 1) Make sure the range marks are clear and not broken. 2) Make sure the applicable range value comes into view on the

 WXR indicator.


 (d)  
Set the RANGE switch in the 200 position. 1) Make sure you see the values; 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200. 2) Make sure you see the WX in the mode field. 3) Make sure you see the VAR in the sub-mode field.

 (e)  
Turn the GAIN control on the WXR indicator slowly to the maximum clockwise position. 1) Make sure the noise display increases until a solid display

 of color comes into view between 80 and 200 nm.

 (f)  
Push the MAP switch on the WXR indicator.

 1)  Make sure the noise increase and MAP is shown in the mode field.

 (g)  
Turn the RANGE, GAIN, and TILT controls to get a ground return near to the middle range mark on the WXR indicator.


 NOTE: Use mountains, hills or other large objects to be
____ the ground targets.
