 CAUTION:_______DO NOT USE CODES 7500, 7600-7677, 7700-7777. THESE ARE EMERGENCY CODES.
 (1)  Set the code select switch on the ATC control panel to an arbritary code.
 (a)  Make sure the test set shows the same code.

 (2)  Change the code on ATC control panel to its compliment. The compliment of code is 7777 minus the code. This codes a check of the full code capability of transponder.
 EXAMPLE: If the code is 0340, its compliment is:
 7777 - 0340 = 7437 compliment

 (3)  On the ATC control panel, push the IDENT switch.
 (a) Make sure the IDENT light on the test set comes on.

 K. Altitude Reporting Test

 (1)  
Connect pitot static test set to appropriate pitot static system (AMM 34-11-00/501, for airplanes without EFIS, or AMM 34-11-01/501, for airplanes with EFIS).

Set the controls on the test set as follows:


 Mode - A/C ALT XPDR SIG - Fully CCW SLS - Center Position PWR Switch - On

Set the altitude reporting switch on the ATC control panel to ON.

Set the altitude SOURCE to the applicable system.

 (5)  
Use the air data test set to apply static pressure and altitude reporting code list to supply sufficient number of test altitudes (between 0 and 35,000 ft).

Make sure the following occurs:

 (a)  
Binary code lines (A1 thru C4 and D4) between the transponder and the altitude source are not open or shorted to ground.

 (b)  
Applicable altimeter is within tolerance (Ref 34-12-00).

 (c)  
At each test altitude, the difference in altitude between the test set and the altimeter is not more than |125 feet.

 


 NOTE: A test altitude above 30,800 feet is necessary for the
____
 check of D4 pulse.


 The altimeter can be adjusted to get the 125 ft tolerance only if the ATC test set continues to show the designated altitude.

 6.  System Test - ATC System - Using Instrument Flight Research ATC - 601_____________________________________________________________________
 A. General
 (1)  
The system test is a more complete check of the ATC system. The system test first does the ATC Operational Test. Then it uses a ramp test set to examine the left and the right ATC system.

 (2)  
This system test satisfy the requirements specify in FAR 91.413 appendix F of part 43, which calls for the periodical check of the ATC transponder, without removing the transponder from the airplane.


 B. Standard Tools and Equipment
 (1)  
Transponder Test Set, IFR Model ATC-601

 (2)  
Air Data Test set, Castleberry AT700-2, Castleberry Instr & Avionics, Austin, TX; or equivalent.
