 6.  Antenna
_______
 A.  The antenna is mounted on the airplane bulkhead behind the radome in an unpressurized section of the airplane. It is used for both transmitting and receiving.
 B.  The antenna is a single-axis, stabilized unit consisting of a pedestal containing the necessary positioning mechanisms and circuitry, and a slotted 24-inch flat circular plate radiator. The antenna emits a 4.2° pencil beam in all modes. It is capable of scanning angles of 40° or 80° either side of dead ahead (80 or 160 total degrees). The antenna has a total of 40 |3 degrees of pitch and roll movement to compensate for airplane attitude changes. The scan rate is 14 looks/minute on the 160-degree scan and 28 looks/minute on the 80-degree scan. The antenna assembly includes fixed sections and two rotating joints of X band waveguide.

 C.  An Azimuth Index Scale (Fig. 1), on the upper azimuth bearing, is indented at increments of -80, -48.6, 0, +48.6 and +80 degrees. The index mark should be opposite |48.6 mark at the end of a 40 degree sweep, and opposite |80 at the end of 80 degree sweep. An Elevation Index scale is on the right side of the tilt bearing, and is indented at increments of 0, 15, 19.7, 20 and 30 degrees. The index is opposite the 15 degree mark when 15 degrees of manual tilt is selected. The Azimuth SCAN DISABLE switch is located on the left side of the antenna, and has a locking bar to hold the switch in the ON postiion.
 7.  Operation_________
 A.  General
 (1) Weather radar operation consists of: A. Operational description,
 B. Functional description, and C. System shutdown procedures. The Operational description is a brief overall description of the Weather Radar System. The Functional description is a more in depth description of the system components and their interface. The system shutdown procedures are performed if the Weather Radar System is put into operation in the operational description.
WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE THE WEATHER RADAR WHILE FUEL IS ADDED OR REMOVED
_______ FROM THE AIRPLANE. DO NOT TRANSMIT RF ENERGY WHILE FUEL IS ADDED OR REMOVED IN AREA 300 FEET OR LESS OF THE ANTENNA. THIS CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION.
MAKE SURE NO PERSONS ARE IN THE AREA 50 FEET OR LESS FROM THE ANTENNA WHEN IT TRANSMITS RF ENERGY. RF ENERGY CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
CAUTION: WHEN WEATHER RADAR IS OPERATED IN ANY MODE OTHER THAN STANDBY OR
_______ TEST, DIRECT NOSE OF THE AIRPLANE SO FORWARD 180-DEGREE SECTOR IS FREE OF LARGE METALLIC OBJECTS (HANGARS, TRUCKS, OTHER AIRPLANES, ETC.) FOR A DISTANCE OF 300 FEET AND TILT ANTENNA UPWARD 14 DEGREES OR DAMAGE TO RECEIVER MAY OCCUR.
 B.  Operational Decription
 (1)
Prior to operation perform the following:

 (a)
Check WEATHER RADAR circuit breakers (115 V AC and 28 V DC on P6 panel) are closed.

 (b)
Check inertial reference system (IRS) number 2 is in NAV (navigate) mode (Ref 34-28-00).

 (2)
Position the controls on the indicator as follows:

 (a)
GAIN to PRESET.

 (b)
SEC SCAN to 160 degrees. (Button out).

 (c)
TILT control to zero.

 (d)
INT control fully counterclockwise.

 (e)
RANGE switch to 100.

 (f)
Press AZIM and TGT ALRT pushbuttons in.

 (g)
Set STAB switch to ON.

 (h)
Select STBY. Allow 70 seconds warmup period.

 (3)
After warmup, the desired mode may be selected (WX, CYC, MAP). The R/T unit will generate the RF pulses for transmission and send them to the antenna via the waveguide switch. The reflected RF is returned to the R/T for amplification (Fig. 2).
