ATC SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________
General (Fig. 1)
_______
 A.  The ATC (Air traffic control) system, when interrogated by a ground station, automatically transmits a pulse-coded reply signal to the ground station. This reply signal is used to identify and locate airplanes equipped with ATC equipment for air traffic control. The reply signal is used to display airplane range, bearing, altitude, and identity on the ground station radar scope.
 B.  The ATC system consists of two ATC transponders, two ATC antennas, and a common control panel. The control panel enables selection of either the No. 1 or 2 transponder, and either No. 1 or 2 air data computer for automatic altitude reporting.
 C.  Electronics bus No. 1 and 2 supply 115 volts ac to the system through
circuit breakers on P6 and P18, load control center-left and right.ATC Control Panel (Fig. 1)
_________________
 A.  The ATC control panel contains the switches and indicators to operate and monitor the ATC system.
 B.  The position of the function selector switch determines the operational status of the transponder. In the STBY position, power is applied to all circuits; however, the system is inhibited from transmitting. In the mode A or B position, the system will be fully operational after approximately 75 seconds warmup time delay. The transponder select switch allows the selection of ATC transponder No. 1 or 2 for use with the system. The altitude reporting switch enables or inhibits the selection of altitude data from the Air Data Pressure Instruments AMM 34-12-00/001, AMM 34-12-01/001, Description and Operation).
 C.  The four identification code switches set the 4-digit code in the display window. The TEST switch when pressed, simulates a received interrogation. The REPLY indicator indicates that the transponder is transmitting coded reply pulses. The identification switch when pressed, causes an identification pulse to be inserted in each transmitted reply pulse train. The FAULT indicator indicates a transponder or antenna fault.
 D.  The control panel receives a 0- to 5-volt ac signal from the lights dimmer control through the 5V AC SEC circuit breaker on the P8 panel (Ref Chapter 33, Pilots' Panel Lights).
ATC Transponder (Fig. 1)
_______________
 A.  Each ATC transponder is a 3/8-ATR short shelf-mounted unit located on the electronic equipment rack E2, shelf No. 2. It contains solid-state components located on printed circuit card assemblies and a power supply. Electrical connections are made to the unit through the main connector (lower connector) at the rear of the unit. There is also an Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) connector at the rear of the unit (upper connector).
