AUXILIARY POWER UNIT - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
________________________________________________
1. General_______
A. Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) (Fig. 1)
(1)
The auxiliary power unit (APU) is a gas turbine engine which supplies electrical and pneumatic power to other airplane systems during airplane ground operations. The APU has a twin-spool turbine engine, two ac generators and automatic controls for a continuous operation. Each of the two ac generators can supply 90 kVA (152 hp) (total of 180 kVA (304 hp)) electrical power to the airplane electrical system (AMM 24-20-00/001). Pneumatic power is supplied by the APU load compressor to the airplane pneumatic system (AMM 36-11-00/001). The airplane pneumatic system supplies compressed air for airplane air conditioning, main engine starting and operation of the air-driven hydraulic pumps.
(2)
The location of the APU is in the tail section between station 2658 and station 2792. You get access to the APU in the APU compartment through the two APU access doors. The APU is attached to a vertical firewall and the airplane upper structure by two forward and one aft mounts. Three vibration isolator-type mounts (shockmounts) are used between the support structure and the APU to isolate the airplane from the APU vibrations (AMM 49-13-00/001).
(3)
The APU operational conditions are shown in table 1.
