Do this task: "Offset Gearbox Removal" (Ref 27-81-16/401).

 (2)  
Do a check of the offset gearbox (Fig. 601):

 (a)  
Use a micrometer to measure the dimensions of the necessary parts.

 (b)  
Measure the spline backlash on 0.075 inch pitch diameter.

 (c)  
Measure the backlash on 0.605 to 0.645 inch diameter on the pinion shaft with 5 to 10 pound-inches force applied.

 (d)  Measure the permitted axial play of the bearings and the axial play of the gear/bearing:
 NOTE: A worn bearing is the primary cause for an offset
____
 gearbox replacement.

 1) Measure the axial play at the input or output shaft. a) If the axial play is less than 0.022 inch, the bearings are serviceable. b) If the axial play is more than 0.045 inch, replace the gearbox or the worn parts. c) If the axial play is between 0.023 and 0.045 inch, measure the permitted radial shaft play.
 2)  Measure the radial shaft play at a point on the input or output shaft 1.73 +/- 0.03 inch from the joint face of the gearbox halves. a) Replace the gearbox or the worn parts if the radial
 shaft play is 0.005 inch. 3) Make sure the offset gearbox operates smoothly after the axial play check.
