E. Procedure (Fig. 401)
S 434-038-C00
(1) Install the nipples into the ports of the replacement actuator.
NOTE: If the replacement actuator is supplied with all the nipples
____
installed, do not do this step.
(a)
Lubricate new o-rings with petrolatum.
(b)
Install the o-rings on the nipples.
(c)
Turn the nipples into the ports of the replacement actuator.
(d)
Tighten the nipples to 135-150 pound-inches
(15.3-17.0 Newton meters).
S 424-039-C00
(2) Install the actuator, with the piston rod extended, as follows:
(a) If it is not installed, install the key lock through the jamnut into the slot of the actuator clevis.
NOTE: Do this with the lockwire hole aligned with the clevis
____ end. Make sure to turn the jamnut as fully as possible on the actuator clevis.
(b)
Install the sleeve into the mount boss at the head end of the actuator.
(c)
Attach the actuator (with the sleeve) to the bellcrank assembly with a bolt and nut at the head end.
NOTE: The bolthead location must be at the forward end.
____
(d)
Tighten the nut to 55-70 pound-inches
(6-8 Newton meters).
(e)
Attach the actuator to the bellcrank assembly at the rod end with a bolt and nut.
NOTE: The bolthead location must be away from the HPC stator
____
case.
(f) Tighten the bolt and nut to 100-120 pound-inches (11.3-13.6 Newton meters).

CAUTION: USE THE HEX END ON THE ACTUATOR ROD ONLY TO TURN THE ROD.
_______ DAMAGE TO THE ROD SURFACE CAN CAUSE ROD SEAL LEAKAGE DURING OPERATION.
(g)
Turn the actuator rod on the part of the actuator clevis with threads approximately 15 turns.
(h)
Connect the fuel tubes of the head and rod ends.
(i)
Tighten the nuts to 135-150 pound-inches (15.3-17.0 Newton meters) and install lockwire.
NOTE: Do not connect the shrouds at this time.
____
(j) Do a check for the correct rig position as follows: 1) Disconnect the coupling nuts on the VSV head and rod ends (tube to hose) at the main engine control (MEC).
2) Connect the hydraulic cart supply and the return hoses to the fuel tubes on the VSV head and rod end.
NOTE: Dry air, nitrogen or an argon source can be used if
____
the hydraulic cart pump is not available.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE MORE THAN 300 PSI (2100 KPA) PRESSURE.
_______
THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO ENGINE PARTS.
3) Use fuel or oil to apply a pressure of 200-300 psi
(1400-2100 kPA) to the rod end.
NOTE: This will put the actuator in position on an open
____ stop (piston fully retracted). Keep pressure during the adjustments that follow to the actuator clevis.
CAUTION: USE THE END HEX ON THE ACTUATOR ROD ONLY TO TURN THE
_______
ROD. DAMAGE TO THE ROD SURFACE CAN CAUSE ROD SEAL
LEAKAGE DURING OPERATION.
4) With the actuator rod retracted, try to install the rig pin in the rig pin hole.
NOTE: If the rig pin holes do not align to permit easy rig
____ pin installation, do the step that follows. Turn the actuator rod on or off the clevis threads to align the holes and install the rig pin.
