 (3)  When the ENGINE START switch turns to the GRD position, make sure
 you can feel or hear the 5th-stage start bleed valve operate (open).

 (4)  If you feel or hear the 5th-stage start bleed valve, turn the ENGINE
 START switch to the OFF position.
 (a) Make sure the valve operates (closes) after you turn the switch
 to the OFF position.
 NOTE: The airflow from the valve will stop immediately, but____
 the core engine will continue to spool down.

 (5)  If you do not feel or hear the 5th-stage start bleed valve operate
 (open), continue as follows:
 (a) Continue to do the dry-motor procedure.
 (b) ENGINES WITH THE START BLEED VALVE DEFLECTOR;
 While the engine speed increases, a large quantity of airflow
 must come out of the diffuser under the deflector baffle.
 (c) ENGINES WITHOUT THE START BLEED VALVE DEFLECTOR;
 While the engine speed increases, a large quantity of airflow
 must come out of the diffuser.
 1) If a large quantity of airflow does not occur, examine the
 signal line from the start valve to the start bleed valve
 for sources of leakage or blockage.
 a) Examine for cracks in the tube, worn areas in the tube
 because of chafing, loose tube nuts or flat tube
 sections.
 2) If you do not find leakage or blockage, replace the start
 bleed valve (AMM 75-34-01/401).
 (d) When there is a sufficient quantity of airflow, turn the ENGINE
 START switch to the OFF position.
 (e) Make sure the airflow from the diffuser stops while the bleed
 valve closes.
 1) If the airflow continues as the engine spools down, replace
 the start bleed valve (AMM 75-34-01/401).

 (6)  Use the Power Plant Dry-Motor procedure to do the engine shut-down
 (AMM 71-00-00/201).

 (7)  Close the left thrust reverser half (AMM 78-31-00/201).

5TH-STAGE START BLEED SYSTEM - INSPECTION/CHECK

 1.  General
_______
 A.  This procedure contains a visual inspection of the 5th-stage start bleed system.
 B.  Examine the bleed valve housing, flanges and air signal tube for damage and worn areas.
 C.  Also, do a fluorescent-penetrant inspection for cracks.

 (1)  
Open the left thrust reverser half (AMM 78-31-00/201).

 (2)  
Examine the bleed valve housing and flanges for:

 (a)  
Cracks; use the fluorescent-penetrant inspection (AMM 70-40-01/201). 1) If there are cracks in the bleed valve housing or flanges,

 replace the valve (AMM 75-34-01/401).

 (b)  
Damage or change to the shape of the bleed valve housing or flanges. 1) If there is damage or change to the shape, replace the

 valve (AMM 75-34-01/401).

 (c)  
Nicks and scratches. 1) Nicks and scratches are permitted.
