WARNING: MAKE SURE THE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE IS OPEN WHEN YOU HOLD IT,
_______ MOVE IT, OR KEEP IT FOR A SUBSEQUENT INSTALLATION. THE DEVICE THAT OPENS THE VALVE CONTAINS A STRONG SPRING THAT CAN CAUSE BAD INJURY TO YOUR FINGERS.
(1) If the relief valve is closed, do these steps to open it.
(a) PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE WITH THE KNOB TYPE OF RESET;
Do these steps to open the pressure relief valve:
NOTE: An open valve has the poppet above the skin on the wing
____ bottom. The manual reset knob and the stem extend below the poppet. When the valve is closed, the outer surface of the poppet is level with the access panel and the skin surface (Fig. 401). The reset knob is also level with the access panel and the skin surface when the valve is closed.
1) Put the end of a tube into one of the three pressure holes in the outer surface of the relief valve (Fig. 402).
NOTE: The usual type of plastic straw that is used to
____ drink a beverage is sufficient for this function.
2) Hold your fingers tightly on the other two pressure holes.

3) Blow into the tube with sufficient force to open the relief valve.
NOTE: You can also use an air pressure source with a
____ maximum limit of 1.0 psi to pressurize the pressure hole.
4) Blow into the tube until the relief valve opens.
NOTE: The valve makes a sudden click that you can easily

hear when it opens.
(b) PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE WITH THE T-HANDLE TYPE OF RESET; Do these steps to open the pressure relief valve: 1) Put a round rod with a diameter less than 0.415 inch (10.54
millimeters) into the pressure sense hole in the center of the T-handle. 2) Apply a moderate force to the rod to simulate the pressure differential necessary to open the pressure relief valve.
NOTE: The valve makes a sudden click that you can hear

when it opens.

(2) Fully clean these surfaces with a clean, lint-free cloth moist with the solvent and dry them:
(a)
The O-ring groove on the relief valve
(b)
The mating surface of the relief valve
(c)
The mating surface of the access panel.

(3) Install the pressure relief valve on the access panel.
(a)
Install a new O-ring seal, lightly lubricated with fuel, in the groove on the flange on the relief valve.
(b)
Put the relief valve in its correct position on the access panel.
(c)
Attach the relief valve to the access panel with the eight mounting screws.
(d)
Tighten the screws equally and smoothly to a torque of 30-35 pound-inches (3.4-3.9 Newton-meters).

Install the surge tank access panel No. 13, 7101L or 7501R, on the airplane (AMM 28-11-11/401).

If the relief valve is open, close the pressure relief valve manually.
(a) Hold the manual reset knob or T-handle and pull it down until the poppet is aligned with the skin.
