INBOARD FLAP BALLSCREWS AND GIMBALS - INSPECTION/CHECK
1. General
A. This procedure has these tasks:
(1) A check of the backlash in the outboard ballscrew for the inboard flap
(2) A check of the backlash in the inboard ballscrew for the inboard flap.

2. Inboard Flap Outboard Ballscrew Inspection
(Figure 601)
A. General
(1) This task is applicable to the ballscrew at flap supports No. 3 and 6.

tools shown are alternates to each other within the same airplane series. Tool part numbers

E. Prepare for the Inspection

Trailing Edge Flaps, TASK 27-51-00-860-803.

F. Inboard Flap Outboard Ballscrew Backlash Check
SUBTASK 27-51-32-480-001
(1) Install the lever and clamp tool on the ballscrew:
NOTE: The lever and clamp tool is a part of the tester, SPL-1753.
(a) Put the lever and clamp tool in its position on the ballscrew aft of the ballscrew nut.
NOTE: Make sure the load surfaces of the lever and clamp tool touch the aft side of the
ballscrew nut.
(b) Tighten the clamp-up bolt to 200-300 pound-inches (22.6 to 33.8 newton-meters).
NOTE: Make sure the handles of the lever and clamp tool are in the relaxed position.

(2) Install the dial indicator assembly on the ballscrew:
NOTE: The dial indicator assembly is a part of the tester, SPL-1753.
(a) Put the dial indicator assembly on the ballscrew.
NOTE: Make sure the pointer touches the forward end of the ballscrew nut.
(b) Put the strap around the ballscrew to help hold the dial indicator assembly on the
ballscrew.
(c) Adjust the dial indicator to zero.

(3) Measure the backlash of the ballscrew and ballscrew nut:
(a) Move the handles of the lever and clamp tool together until the dial indicator stops.
NOTE: This will apply a load to the ballscrew nut, and move it forward on the ballscrew.
(b) Use the dial indicator to measure the movement of the ballscrew nut.
NOTE: The movement of the ballscrew nut is the backlash.
(c) Do these steps a total of five times to make sure the movement of the dial indicator is
repeatable.

(4) If the backlash is more than 0.0073 inch (0.185 millimeter), then replace the ballscrew assembly.

Inboard Flap Outboard Ballscrew and Gimbal Installation, TASK 27-51-32-400-801.

(5) Remove the dial indicator assembly and the lever and clamp tool from the ballscrew.
G. Put the Airplane Back to Its Usual Condition
