4. Inboard Flap Inboard Transmission Removal

(1) This task is applicable to the transmissions at flap supports No. 4 and 5.

D. Prepare for the Removal

(1) Extend the trailing edge flaps to the 40-unit position. To extend them, do this task: Extend the
Trailing Edge Flaps, TASK 27-51-00-860-803.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THE DOWNLOCK PINS ARE INSTALLED ON ALL THE LANDING GEAR.
WITHOUT THE DOWNLOCK PINS, THE LANDING GEAR CAN RETRACT AND CAUSE
INJURIES TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(2) If the downlock pins are not installed in the nose and main landing gear, do this task: Landing
Gear Downlock Pins Installation, TASK 32-00-01-480-801.

(3) Do this task: Trailing Edge Flap System Deactivation, TASK 27-51-00-040-801.
E. Inboard Flap Inboard Transmission Removal
SUBTASK 27-51-31-980-002
(1) Manually extend the trailing edge flaps to the downstop on the ballscrew. To extend them, do
this task: Trailing Edge Flap System Manual Operation, TASK 27-51-00-980-801.
SUBTASK 27-51-31-020-005
(2) Remove the u joint assembly [70]:
(a) Remove the bolts [66], washers [67] and nuts [68] that attach the u joint assembly [70] to the
transmission assembly [49] and the tee angle gearbox [68].
(b) Remove the u joint assembly [70] from the transmission assembly [49].

CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU HOLD THE BALLSCREW WHILE YOU DISCONNECT IT. IF YOU LET
THE U-JOINT HOLD THE BALLSCREW, YOU WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE U-JOINT.
(3) Disconnect the ballscrew assembly [42] with the gimbal [43] from the carriage [47]:
(a) Install a support to hold the ballscrew assembly [42] when it is disconnected from the
carriage [47].
(b) Remove the nuts [44], washers [45] and bolts [41] that attach the carriage bushings [46] to
the carriage [47].
(c) Remove the carriage bushings [46] from the carriage [47].
(d) Move the gimbal [43] away from the carriage [47].
SUBTASK 27-51-31-020-007
(4) Disconnect the ballscrew assembly [42] from the yoke [53] on the transmission assembly [49]:
(a) Remove the nuts [59], washers [58], washers [57] and bolts [56] that attach the ballscrew
assembly [42] to the yoke [53].
(b) Remove the ballscrew assembly [42] from the yoke [53].
NOTE: You can turn the ballscrew assembly [42] and the gimbal [43] to get access to
remove the ballscrew assembly [42].
(c) Remove the ballscrew assembly [42] with the gimbal [43].
SUBTASK 27-51-31-020-008
(5) Remove the transmission assembly [49]:
NOTE: The transmission assembly [49] weighs approximately 50 pounds (23 kilograms).
(a) Support the transmission assembly [49] while you disconnect it from the transmission
attach fitting [51].
(b) Remove the nuts [63], washers [62], washers [61], bolts [60], bolt [64] and bolt [65] that
attach the transmission assembly [49] to the transmission attach fitting [51].
(c) Carefully remove the transmission assembly [49].
