Replacement of the Active Seals with the Spare Seals (Fig. 801)
S 588-007
(1) Lift the inner cylinder of the nose gear until the inner cylinder is extended three to four inches.
NOTE: Use a jack under the jack pad for the nose gear to do
____
this.
S 958-008
(2) Put cloth pads around the inner cylinder below the gland nut (8).
NOTE:____Do this to prevent damage to the inner cylinder. If the gland nut moves down the inner cylinder, the sharp edges of the gland nut will cause damage to the inner cylinder.
S 948-009
CAUTION: YOU MUST IMMEDIATELY CLEAN HYDRAULIC FLUID FROM THE TIRES
_______ IF YOU GET HYDRAULIC FLUID ON THEM. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS, YOU CAN CAUSE DETERIORATION TO THE TIRES.
(3)
Put a drip pan below the nose gear to catch hydraulic fluid when you remove the gland nut.
(4)
Remove the gland nut lock (18) from the aft side of the shock strut.
(5)
Use the pin spanner adapter assembly to loosen the gland nut.

(6) Move the scraper adapter (15) and scraper ring (7) down the inner cylinder into the gland nut.
S 588-013
WARNING:_______DO NOT PRESSURIZE THE SHOCK STRUT TO MORE THAN 100 PSI. IF YOU PRESSURIZE THE SHOCK STRUT TO MORE THAN 100 PSI, YOU CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(7) Slowly lower the inner cylinder until the lower bearing (6) and lower centering cam (2) are sufficiently open for the seal replacement.
NOTE: Make a note of the lower centering cam orientation when you
____ do this step. This will assist you when do step (16).
NOTE: If the inner cylinder will not extend sufficiently,
____ pressurize the shock strut with pneumatic pressure (100 psi maximum). This will help extend the inner cylinder and push the parts from the shock strut.
S 028-014
(8) Cut the active static-seal O-ring (17) and the backup rings (1) from the outer groove in the lower centering cam.
NOTE: Use a plastic tool for this to prevent damage to the cam.
____
S 028-015
CAUTION: YOU MUST BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE INNER
_______ CYLINDER. NICKS OR SCRATCHES ON THE INNER CYLINDER WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CENTERING CAM AND THE SEALS. THIS DAMAGE WILL OCCUR AS THE SEALS MOVE OVER THE DAMAGED SURFACE OF THE INNER CYLINDER.
(9) Cut the active dynamic-seal assembly (16), and remove the backup rings (3) from the inner cylinder.
NOTE: Use a thin metal strip between the seal and the surface
____ of the material which the seal touches to do this. Do this to prevent damage to the material which the seal touchs.
