Find the average value of torsional free play.

 (a)  
If the average value you will get in the step above is less than 0.095 inch, then the torsional free play is satisfactory.


 NOTE: The 0.095 inch free play agrees with the 0.0082 inch

 radian.

Use the feeler gages to measure the clearance between the bushing flanges at the upper, the lower and the apex joints of the torsion links.

If the torsion link axial free play is more than .008 inches, install the cres shim washers (AMM 32-21-31/801).

If the diameters of the pin or the inner surface of the bushing are more than their wear limits, replace these parts.

After the installation of the torsion link pins, do another check of the torsional free play.

 If the torsional free play is not satisfactory and the average value is more than the approved maximum, do these steps:

 (a)  
Remove the steering cylinder (AMM 32-51-51/401).

 (b)  
Do a check on all the interfacing dimensions of the bearings, bushings, and the attachment bolts of the steering cylinder.

 (c)  
Remove the steering collar (AMM 32-51-61/401).

 (d)  
Do a check on all the interfacing dimensions of the steering collar, and the steering collar bearing.

 Replace the parts which show signs of worn areas.

 After installation of the steering cylinder and steering collar components, do one more check of the torsional free play.

 If the check is satisfactory, put the airplane in its usual
 condition.

 If the torsional free play is not satisfactory and the average value is more than the approved maximum, do these steps:

 (a)  
Remove the shock strut assembly of the nose landing gear (AMM 32-21-00/401).

 (b)  
Do a check on all the interfacing dimensions for the trunnion pin, the forward and aft trunnion bearings, and the outer cylinder.

 Replace the parts which show signs of worn areas.

 If it is necessary, replace the bushing that interfaces the inner cylinder and the steering collar.

Remove the wood 2 x 6 and the dial indicator platform.
