 1.  General
_______
 A.  Two horizontal situation indicators (HSI) are installed in the airplane, one on each pilot's instrument panel. Each HSI has an individual instrument clamp attached to the rear of the flight instrument panel behind the panel cutout. The HSI slips through the cutout and into the clamp from the front of the panel. The clamp constricts around the instrument, holding it in place, as clamp adjusting screws on the front of the panel are tightened. Each HSI has two electrical cables attached to the rear of the unit through two quick-disconnect connectors.
 2.  Remove Horizontal Situation Indicator_____________________________________(See figure 401.)
 A.  Turn all the INS MSU selector switches (P5) to the OFF position.
 B.  Open HSI 1 and HSI 2 circuit breakers on electronic circuit breaker panel P7.
 C.  Loosen upper right and lower left (HSI clamp adjusting) screws.
NOTE____Do not loosen upper left or lower right (mounting) screws. These screws hold the HSI clamp in place behind the instrument panel.
 D.  Press on clamp adjusting screws to loosen clamp.
 E.  Pull HSI out from instrument panel.
 F.  Remove two quick-disconnect electrical cable connectors on back of HSI.
 3.  Install Horizontal Situation Indicator______________________________________(See figure 401.)
 A.  Connect two electrical cables to the rear of HSI.
 B.  Insert HSI through cutout and into clamp at rear of instrument panel.
 C.  Tighten upper right and lower left (HSI clamp adjusting) screws.
 D.  Close HSI 1 and HSI 2 circuit breakers on electronic circuit breaker panel P7.
 E.  After installing HSI, test instrument by performing HSI test. (Refer to 34-41-06, Horizontal Situation Indicator - Adjustment/Test.)

 1. Horizontal Situation Indicator Test
___________________________________
 A. General
 (1)  Two horizontal situation indicators (HSI) are installed in the airplane, one on each pilot's instrument panel. Each HSI is electrically connected by two connectors in the rear of the unit. This test provides a rapid check to verify that both electrical connectors are properly connected to the HSI and to test both data display modules.
 B. Referenced Procedures
 (1)
21-58-00, Equipment Cooling - Adjustment/Test (Operational Test)

 (2)
24-22-00, Manual Control - Maintenance Practices (Apply Power)

 C. Prepare for Test
 (1)
Set mode selector switch on each INS mode selector unit in pilots' overhead panel P5 to OFF position.

 (2)
Set STANDBY POWER switch on flight engineer's panel to NORMAL.

 (3)
On IB 406-499, place AUTO/MAN/RMT switches in MAN position on each control display unit in forward (P9) and aft (P8) electronics panels.

 (4)
Provide electrical power. Refer to 24-22-00.

 (5)
Provide cooling air to INS equipment. Refer to 21-58-00.

CAUTION: ENSURE THAT COOLING AIR IS AVAILABLE TO NAVIGATION UNITS
_______ BEFORE OPERATING INS. FAILURE TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE AIR SUPPLY WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF NAVIGATION UNITS.
 (6)
Close all INS, HSI and FLT INST SW RELAYS circuit breakers on electronic circuit breaker panels P7 and P126.

 (7)
On airplanes with PMS, when the INS is in the PMS waypoint control mode; control of the INS is through the PMS CDU, and the INS CDU operates only as a display unit. To operate the INS totally independent of the PMS, open the PMS cirucit breakers (Ref 34-62).

 D. Turn on and align INS 1 and 2 (IB 406-499).
NOTE: Steps (1) thru (5) are written for a single inertial system
____ for reason of clarity. They must be performed on both INS No. 1 and INS No. 2 for this test.
 (1)  Set the mode selector switch (pilots' overhead panel P5) to STBY.
 (a)  On IB 406-409, place the control display unit data selector to POS, check that: 1) Red, amber and green lamps do not illuminate. 2) Left-hand data display is all zeros and an N. 3) FROM/TO display is 0 0.
